Is STI a brand new acronym to confuse people that know nothing about medicine or is it another category of STDs?

When/why did this happen?
It's been years since that change was made. I think the reason is that Infection is more specific than Disease.

I know I was a bit surprised by the change as well. But these things can take decades to filter to everybody. I know folks still refer to Orcas as Killer whales even though they're not particularly violent and aren't even whales.

It appears they made that change quite a while ago, if Wikipedia is to be believed.
Poor Subaru owners....wonder if they have to get their Imprezza WRX tested for STi's...
Now what will we make fun of my sister for?

Oh wait, she's my sister!

*waits for it.....*
It's like changing all stop signs to a generic rectangle to tell people to use their brakes.

Hey, if you're old enough you'll remember them being called VD (Venereal Disease), I'm sure they'll come up with a better name in another year or two:)

I don't know the rationale really, I do know things that aren't primarily transmitted via sexual activity, but are often transmitted that way, are now included, though.

On the plus side, saying "the clap" still elicits giggles and everyone still knows what you mean.

Yep, and syphilitic is still pretty much the best one to use when trolling people.

Also, I don't think you have to be that old to remember them being called VD, that change was only made in the '80s and it still shows up in pop culture from time to time even now.

Now GRIDS, that's something you have to be fairly old to remember as I don't think anybody has used that term except during a brief period, well before people really became aware of the epidemic.
STD has "negative connotations" now so they changed it. Also it is apparently more accurate to make it "sti" like how some random made it a crusade to change "Starfish" to "seastar" because they aren't really fish....well they aren't exactly stars either >_< and it isn't as though disease and illness are the same thing and they changed it for no reason so how is it any more accurate at all

infection is less scary sounding than disease and cdc doesn't want to track the evil ones like aids so now we won't be so scared :)
save that disease talk for the zombies when we really need it. unless zombies are superaids

Surprise Toad Infestations?

I mean, ya, the little buggers do pop up from time to time, but there's nothing quite as disturbing as waking up to a giant toad sitting on your chest. Just...staring...at you...
I remember in a health class in... 7th or 8th grade (which was like 8 or 9 years ago now) we were taught that the "new term" was STI, though a bunch of the books we had said STD (because they were slightly older). We were told (if I remember correctly) that it was partially because it was more specific and correct, and partially because infection is less pejorative than disease.
Well of course it's STI! STD stands for a completely different thing.

Yeah well, don't forget about STP, although the confusion with STD is probably understandable.

Thanks for that. I've been trying to figure out that acronym for years with no success. I'm aware how easily Wikipedia solved this problem, but I try to avoid insta-knowledge if I can. Maybe that's why I spend so much time on GOG forums ;)

Alas now I weep for one of the best alternative rock bands of the early 90s. Why'd you have go and screw it all up, Scott Weiland?
