lettmon: GOG forum is the nicest forum I have ever seen. Obviously you haven't visited much other forums if you think insulting here is bad xD
I agree ... Strange enough everyone (well most everyone) seems sort of like Family.
I visit the GOG forums as much if not more than I visit Facebook (especially since I stopped playing those browser crashing Zynga games). It's like home away from home here.

If my family had a forum trust me, I WOULDN'T HANG OUT IN THERE!

Yeah. Heck, even if there's a few users here that I get into an argument with rather often (although not *that* often) I appreciate pretty much everyone's presence here. Man, I love this place. And I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I haven't observed such a negative change of climate here as Trilarion describes it.
I have seen many forums around the net, and so many of them come across as being very immature.

Been a member of this community for over 2 years now, but spent most of that following, reading, lurking. During that time, the GOG community has shown itself to be relatively mature and tame in comparison to many other forums, and as such I have recently started to get into the posting habit.

That being said, there are the occasional flash flamings and trollings, but overall this is a good place to post. Many members do cuss out and "insult" each other, but it is usually very tongue-in-cheek and playful.

Being able to have a debate without the conversation degrading into a furball is extremely refreshing, and I hope this never changes as it is a key draw of the community. My thanks to you all for making and maintaining such an atmosphere.

Are you kidding!?! If it was mine, would just get the popcorn, drink, and sit back and watch! (I know this seems to contradict what I said earlier, but in many ways the good-natured ribbing that goes on is this forum is multiplied a lot with them).

PetrusOctavianus: GOG really needs an Ignore function.
That way the sensitive people can ignore the not so sensitive ones, and vice versa.
I agree. And I'm not against heated arguments, flaming etc.. keeps communities together sometimes, but some people just don't go along together and the sooner one accepts that one can go on and talk to the ones that you can accept. Simple as that. :)

monkeydelarge: I don't downrep. You do know there is a way to hide giveaways?

Elenarie: Wasnt talking about you specifically. But there are some butthurt schmucks here that downrep everything one they dislike posts, which further fuels one to dislike this place.

Doesnt help when GOG themselves use and promote PC MASTER RACE shit.
Heil PC! o/

...on (slightly) more serious note, you dont actually care about the rep do you? Ive always considered it just some dumb number running in the sideline and could hardly care less whether it was 10 or 10 000.
the community in general is well mannered but the fighting and outright insults i have seen occur in select topics specially the ones related to steam , i guess the community gets irate when steam is discussed here , other than that i haven't seen any insulting outside of steam related topics.

perhaps if the forums were divided properly into sub forums we would avoid a lot of issues that are happening something like

general discussion
off-topic
trading
giveaways
troubleshooting and help
site issues
I rather enjoy GOG's single global forum. Troubleshooting and help generally seems to go in the game specific forums.

Trilarion: This is no giveaway but also no vent, just an opinion. My impression is that the occurence of insults has increased and that the quality of the discussions suffers from it. This will or has already lead to the emigration of the more sensitive part of the crowd. And it should also result in less interesting discussions. I wouldn't like both.

I wonder how the number of customers of GOG relates to the number of active community members, if they both increase accordingly or not. And I wonder if maybe the number of active community memberts was even bigger at some point in history.

I think what has to be done is that everybody reduces a bit how important the own opinions are perceived as well as the eagerness to use insulting statements has to be reduced. Also stepping of peers in the obvious cases might do some good.

Thanks for the attentiion!

nijuu: GOG is an open forum and not moderated (unless in extreme cases as far as i know). People say what they want. Most people are courteous but i haven't seen anyone really be rude rude so to say. Are you sure your not thin skinned ?
It's a moderation issue. You have to do quite a bit around here to get banned.

I think it's pretty much inevitable that when there's no moderation that people are going to get cranky. The forum culture pretty much always slides towards anarchy in the absence of moderators keeping an eye on things.

So many threads slide out of control because of the lack of any moderation when the folks in Poland go to bed. Whereas a temporary thread lock to give folks a time to think things through would likely lead to move civility. I think GR's smut hut was up for nearly 10 hours before anybody from GOG responded to it.

I know I was a lot more tolerant of general idiocy for the first couple years I was here.

The system isn't the problem, people are. We like to fight, defend our honour and whatever else we do.

That's why promote an ignore list. Of course such an option is useless for the whole community if everyone abuse it or don't use it at all. The point is: instead of fighting with someone (see: fighting, not discuss or argue) you ignore them. I'm also trusting the idea that most people here are mature to not overdo it but it's just a list, you can uncheck anyone as soon as you want to.

At least they don't let people attach an explanation when they up and down rep. Back before I deleted my fitocracy account people would attach libelous accusations to people's rep. And there was precisely no interest by the people running the site of dealing with any of that.
No, you're stupid!

Oh wait, you're serious...

Massive +1 on that. The GOG forum is by far the most agreeable, open-minded, generous and literate forum I've ever been on. And I've been frequenting forums for 15 years. :)

Don't forget the "Back-Slapping" sub-forum for all the antagonist crap that gets posted for no other reason than to facilitate that.
