I remember sometime ago, people talking at length about the finer points of whiskey. I wasn't really interested at the time as I had never drank it before. However, my Dad recently gave me a bottle of whiskey (as he knows I enjoy the occasional spirit, I'm not a big drinker though any any means).

The whiskey was called Highland Black, 8 year old, special reserve. It was a scotch. I tried it neat and to my surprise, I found I could drink it relatively easily as it had quite a mellow flavour, I liked it. A few days later I bought a bottle of Teachers which of course is a much younger whiskey. That one was alot harsher on the throat and had a strong smokey flavour that I didn't really like.

A friend of mine said I should go with an Irish whiskey rather than a scotch because you don't get that woody taste like you do with a scotch. He recommended Tullamore Dew which he said is very good, so I'll probably pick up a bottle of that soon.

I know there are some whiskey lovers here. I would love any whiskey recommendations or any other advise or info you can give me in general, as I'm developing a taste for ye old whiskey now.
Irish > Scotch, for my tastes. Still, I've had some good Scotch. Parents recently brought an 8yo bottle home from their trip 'round the UK for me and my brother.
The Macallan. I've never had finer. My college friends and I would save up to afford the 12 year, and we would make it last all semester. I had the 18 year once, and it was the finest drink I've ever had.

I don't drink any more, but having had The Macallan made giving up the sauce a little easier, knowing I've had the best the habit had to offer. I know I ain't missing anything.

Cheers.
Whiskey is awesome when mixed with coca-cola. It doesn't even cause a hangover!
Still nope, after I found I am "allergic" to whiskey. One shot => splitting headache.

Other alcohol goes down smoothly, albeit for some reason I am not the biggest fan of red wines nowadays either. It has been some time since I drank any anyway, but before Christmas there tend to be many parties and occasions to drink...
I prefer peaty whiskies. My favorites are mostly Islay single malts: Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg. I also like the Talisker (Isle of Skye).
When I drank I drank everything, partly why I had to quit. There is a great scene in "The Beast" where they find out the gunner is filtering break fluid through raisin bread and drinking it. If I ever access to a Russian tank I'd for sure have to try that.
Don't drink spirits other than an occasional brandy at christmas and its been that way for many years now.
When I used to drink whisky, however, I veered towards Talisker as a favourite.
The way I drink whiskey is - buy the cheapest bottle in the super-market, and drink it in less than one hour :P

That's me, except for beer. After a couple sips I have to stop because of a bad headache+nausea. No other forms of alcohol do this.
Heresy! Scotch is the best, particularly the single malts! They can be pricier, but do yourself a favour and try an Islay distillery, Laphroaig or Bowmore, perhaps. Or a Speyside Glenlivet. Either way, that's the good stuff :-)

BEGONE mixer of fine spirits! Leave this place!

:)

Seriously though, if you're mixing really good stuff with cola, it's punch in the head time. :)
Slightly pedantic note here, but you're not going to get Scotch whiskey, it's whisky.

Whiskey refers to the drink of Irish or American origins.

Just so you know :-)
