You can't use them for promotions, just as an example (or so it was said ;)).

There's a nice little 'tutorial' on a Witcher 2 related posting.
Basically, instead of navigating to 'redeem gift' ( http://www.gog.com/en/gift ), you head for the promotion code equivalent ( https://www.gog.com/en/bonus/ ), enter your code, then 'a new section should become visible below the button, describing what exactly this code gives you'. After you 'click the continue to our catalogue link to see a list of games you can get and proceed just like with a normal purchase - you will notice a tempting "grab for FREE" price tag next to the familiar "download now" button'.
