I should add, I also played this game very late. I actually only beat it a few months ago.
I didn't get it when it came out because the reviews were pretty lackluster. It was buggy and had many translation issues. The demo kind of sucked too.
I never thought I would play it until a friend of mine told me how much he enjoyed it. He too only played after all patches came out and drm was removed. We both didn't care about drm, but the patches and enhanced edition made a huge difference.
It's one of my favorite RPGs of all time now. I rarely like American RPGs and I seemed to have lost my interest in JRPGs since FF10. So I guess it's not a genre I'm even that into anymore.
So for now it is fond memories of classic snes/ps1 jrpgs, many bioware games, and The Witcher. heh.
I've had my eye on Risen and Mount and Blade though. I just have too many games as is at this point. :P
I bought The Witcher retail but never played it properly due to my hardware not being up to snuff at the time.
Then the EE came and I wanted to buy that instead, but few retail copies seemed to make their way to Norway and I couldn't find a copy when I wanted it.
Then I rebought the game on Steam during the christmas sales.
Looking forward to playing it proper now. When I'm done with MW2 and DA:O.

Any tips for those of us getting ready to play it for the first time?

Mobidoy: To solve this, you can grab the flash mod

Wow that mod has really expanded. Particularly love the ability to hide the GUI. Thanks for the link!

Take your time, read the story, play poker, do the fist fight and drinking contests, give priority to side quests, remember that some of your decision will change the way some of the npc reacts towards you giving you different ending. No mather the choice you make, your Geralt will always act has if it was the right one so, dont try to find the right choice :)
Finaly, enjoy the game :)
PS: Always be nice to the ladies and collect all the naked cards :)

As for DRM-free games, you could go and [url=http://www.the-prism.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=f172d19cf590e437ab7bdcce287a78a8&board=35.0]here.
All digital versions of The Witcher are now DRM-free. The 1.5 patch renders the game DRM-free.
=)
The Witcher up and running DRM Free and Director's Cut - Thanks
Also added the flash mod - nothing like playing a game on insane mode to make one seriously frustrated. ;-)

I was reading the forums, at least one guy thinks it's still too easy. Can't wait to try. :)
The addition of wounds/visual marks/etc is really cool, too.

(Thread necromancy!)
I also just got the game - my local EBGames (Gamestop) had a physical copy of the Enhanced Edition, so I thought eh, why not. I haven't installed it yet, and may not actually get around to it for a few months, but the links in this thread will most likely prove useful. Thanks!

Once I am done with Mass Effect 2, I'll move back to the Witcher which I have bought from Steam sometime back when the Witcher was 50% off.
good idea :) i've finished The Witcher last year and i can say it's a truly wonderful game. and i'm willing to finish it for the second time, but with different choices made during the game.

Not true. My Steam version still has the Steam DRM.
