psadler: I managed it! I turned on DEP and it worked even without administrator rights or any compatibility settings! The strange thing is that it didn't recognise any of my old saves. So I started a new game and saved once to let it recreate a new save folder, and then deleted that save abd put my old save from the same slot in and it worked!. I then started a new game and saved in the other slots and then deleted them too and put my old saves in and they worked too. The only thing is that their names were the same as the new game saves, so I simply loaded each one in and saved it in the same slot and now they are all named correctly.

Thanks for the help everybody
Can you tell me what DEP is please?

Data Execution Prevention. You should be able to turn it off/exclude specific programs, etc., via the system properties (Advanced system settings > Advanced tab > Performance Settings > Data Execution Prevention tab).

Thanks bansama, psadler had actually pm'd me with the info, I forgot to edit my post to reflect this though.

Thanks again :)
Well I can sorta get this running right off the bat (unpatched version). But it suffers from the following problems:

Videos don't play correctly.
Screen settings don't save - so it defaults to 640 x 480 full screen, which fucks up my entire system until I log off =/
Screen is too dark - a common problem with old unreal engine games, but the usual fix doesn't work.

Next up is trying the patch.
There is a facebook group for this game mostly filled with the people from the old Wheel of Time forums from before the game was even released... Including yours truly.

They are very likely the best place to get help for this game if you're having issues.

A shame to hear it doesn't work on Windows 7 properly, I remember that game being a lot of fun, I think I still have my disk somewhere. I would love for it to show up on GoG someday (if the compatibility issues could be worked out).
Right, the patches complete break it for me. It no longer finds disc 2 U_U. Will need to uninstall it and start over, so will probably check it on my XP partition first.

It did that to me too so I had to use a no cd file to play a game I actually own.

I'll remember that for next time. But I'm going to see if the videos play better under XP first.

psadler: Has anyone managed to get this working on Windows 7? I've tried all maner of compatiblity modes and what have you but I've had no luck.

timppu: I have played it in Win7/64bit (on my work laptop). Otherwise it seems to run great, except for the darn Quicktime videos. I don't recall if I let the game install some outdated Quicktime, but at least the game simply skipped all the video parts (the intro, the in-between levels videos that tell you more of the story etc.).

I tried to fix it by installing the latest "Quicktime" ie. iTunes. After that the videos showed all right... at a rate of maybe 0.5 FPS or so, ie. the videos looked like a slideshow (the audio is fine). But if you opened the video files from the iTunes player, then they played fine. Odd.

So in case you can't get the videos to work like I didn't, I guess one option is to play the game, and watch the videos with your favorite media player whenever you finish a level etc. EDIT: Well ok, apparently it doesn't work at all for you...

As a matter of fact, maybe I'll try installing it again, in case it magically works on this machine. Or maybe I'll just finish it on one of my XP or Wn98SE PCs where the videos play fine.

Liljna: To test it out, I have just now installed Wheel of Time on my machine (win 7 home). I also played through the tutorial, so it is definitely working.

I didn't do anything special or use any compatibility modes.

I hope you find a way to make it work :)

timppu: Do you see the video parts too? Did you let the game install the ancient Quicktime drivers etc.?
I'm sorry for the late reply.
I did install Quicktime 4, but I don't remember seeing any videos. I just started the game again, and tried to watch the intro in the menu, which I was not able to.
I wasn't aware I was missing any videos, so I guess my installation didn't work 100% as I thought it did.
So no, I didn't see the video parts either.

Yeah I didn't realize it at first either because the game simply skips the videos it can't show. It just felt odd when I started a new level and ended up in some completely new area, I felt like I missed part of the story as the narrator was referring to things that I was unaware of.

Turned out the narrator was referring to things that e.g. happened in the videos between the levels. I noticed the videos when I tried playing the game on my retro-PC.

As said, I got the videos to play too (during the game) in Win7 by installing iTunes, which includes new Quicktime. But the videos would play as a slideshow, while the audio played fine.

Ok I installed this also on G75VW laptop (Win7/64bit).

Installs fine. If I run the base version without updating the game, it lets me play only with software renderer. When I update the game to the latest version 333b, it recognizes the Geforce GTX 670M and lets me choose Direct3D, which seems to work fine. It offers all kinds of resolutions all the way up to 1920x1080 (but then the text in the game is hard to read, too small).

I think another option to get 3D accelerated graphics is to install nGlide, in which case you get the option to use 3Dfx Glide graphics. They work fine too, but I think then you are restricted to max 640x480 or 800x600 graphics, if I recall correctly (that's the hardware limit in the 3Dfx Voodoo/Voodoo 2 cards, due to the amount of frame buffer memory).

I let the game install Quicktime 4 too, which now shows the intro and between-levels videos too in-game, but they play badly: sound is scratched and the videos play as slideshows, like 0.5 frames per second. Similar thing happened on my other (older) Win7 PC, but IIRC the audio on those videos was better on it.

If I play the Quicktime videos from CD2 on e.g. VLC media player, they play fine. Maybe I'll still try to install the latest "Quicktime" ie. iTunes on this PC too to replace the obsolete Quicktime 4, but at least on the other.PC this did not fix the in-game FMV problem.

So it may be the most sensible way to play this game on modern PCs is to skip the intros and FMVs, and just play them out of the game whenever you complete a level etc. They are not totally useless videos as they give you part of the story, but I guess the game can be completed even without them, as the game does give you the objectives for each level. You may just be missing the reason why you are given those objectives, as the reason was depicted in the videos between the levels.

The videos are pretty crude though, so I don't see any aesthetic value in trying to get them to work. Other than the story, they don't really add much to the experience IMHO.

I haven't yet tried to run the game on a VMWare virtual environment running either WinXP or Win98SE, that might be one convoluted solution too. But since at least for me the issue seems to be only the FMV, it's probably not worth it.

You could try to install just QuickTime, perhaps it's slightly different than the iTunes-bundled version: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL837

Ah ok, somehow I missed that earlier and thought installing iTunes is the only way to install also Quicktime nowadays. Thanks a lot. Let's see how backwards-compatible Quicktime is...
