Okay so has anyone noticed that Trilogy's are the BIG thing now?

Example:

Mass Effect (1-3) Finished
Assassins Creed (1-Ezio Trilogy-3) Going to be finished
Dragon Age (DAO-DA2-DA3) Going to be finished
Too Human (1) incomplete
Psi Ops (1) incomplete
Tomb Raider (1-reboot)
Fable (1-3) Who knows if Peter will ever "Finish" the story
Infamous (1-2) Finished or is there going to be 3?
Uncharted (1-3) Finished?or is there going to be a 4?
God of War (1-3) Finished
Fallout Series
Baldur's Gate

When did it become "the thing" to only make trilogy's? I realize that having a trilogy means extending the life of an IP but if you look at older games Example: King's Quest, Space Quest, QFG, were never meant to be Long Convoluted continuing stories. The games told there story and it was done, if the developers did a good job they would make Game 2.

Now I feel with all this Trilogy Craze those few games that have great beginnings example Psi Ops, but don't get the following are never finished and your left with the first chapter of a game and nothing to finish it. This in my opinion is a bad thing.

Dragon Age was never envisioned as a trilogy. Origins and 2 don't even share a plotline, just the broad setting.

Why do people insist on putting discuss at the end of their post? Do you think we'll just come in and start talking about random stuff instead of what you posted? Do you think it'll wallow away, buried under better posts and never get replied to at all? What the heck?

What about the Fallout series ?

Well, today, making a trilogy unlocks the prequels. Jeff Williams summed it up nicely.

Looking over your list again, it seems more your concern is sequels. Several of the games on the list have no plot carry over typical of trilogies. They're just franchises that get continued as long as they sell. Dragon Age, Fable, UnchartedBioware intends to carry Dragon Age on as long as possible. It is entirely possible that Hawke could form a trilogy within that, but speculation to that end is not proof of it.

I love trilogies, honestly. And it's not like they're anything new, so I'm not sure what your getting at here.

I don't feel your argument doesn't holds much water - Even the games you mentioned were stories in a series. Eye of the Beholder, Wizardry, Might and Magic, Magic Candle, The Old Gold Box were in 3 different series, Lands of Lore... it goes on and on and on.

Not any kind of trilogy either. Interplay just called their remaining titles "Fallout Trilogy" for marketing purposes. Maybe Van Buren would have made it a trilogy, but Black Isle got the sack before it amounted to any more than a demo.

Not so much an argument just an interesting observation that all the games nowadays want this long continuing story and then if it doesn't make the cut it gets forgotten. Was it an article I'd be interested in reading it.

1977? I think we can blame either Star Wars or Lord of the Rings for making trilogies the "it" thing. The problem is that those two had two much story for one volume so they were split into three. Most other trilogies seem to want to be a trilogy in principle because it sounds "cooler" than duology or tetralogy. Easier to spell too.

Holy crap, you're right! I've always been such a fan of the things that aren't trilogies that I never thought of that.

[edit: someone's going to get riled up that exactly none of those things are actually trilogies (though Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever is two trilogies, and LotR is a trilogy *in* a trilogy, just for extra credit). I know this. Please note that a trilogy is the *natural order of a dramatic presentation* from introduction to climax to denouement, and is seen in damn near everything from ever.]
