Never really thought about why I like rpgs so much. I do enjoy thinking what will happen in the plot next or how I will beat a particularly difficult part outside of the game. I also enjoy playing them while being relaxed. Might be why I prefer turn-based over Action rpgs.

I like a lot of things about roleplaying games, but the one thing I enjoy about them the most is that a good open ended dialogue system with choice/consequence can provide much more enjoyment than pretty much any gameplay gimmick, and you just can't get that sort of depth in dialogue with choice/consequence from any game but a roleplaying game. (Also, holy run on sentence).

That is also why I love Troika Games' games (makers of The Temple of Elemental Evil, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, and Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines) so much. Their games may have been a bit buggy, but I've never seen any game company provide such consistently strong dialogue with choice and consequence as them. Build your character to be a dumb strong brute and they'll talk like one, build your character to be a silver tongued trickster and they'll talk like one. Likewise their worlds believably react to your words and your actions.

Please note C&C on Castles is actually an ancestor of actual ones. It presents itself in the form of random events, from which you, as ruler of the kingdom, must choose a decision out of three. Something like: the Bishop is worried about the rise of a particular sect and demands punitive actions to be taken. You: a) apprehend the heretics to be burned at the stake, b) exile them, c) tell the bishop to be more tolerant... (don't take my example as an precise one, my memory is atrocious) ;)
