I was curious what this thread was going to be about!

I play a male character more often than not, but will occasionally play a female one as well. Also, in a few action RPGs I can think of, class and sex are linked. Here I decide by class and that will determine my gender in game.
a group of women is much more pleasant to look at than a group of dudes, but that's just me.
Well I'm a girl, and for RPG's I'd rather look at a handsome man, for 150 hours or so:)
As you can see in this thread (shameless promotion here) I also prefer playing female characters if I have a choice. Exceptions are games with romance options, but only straight ones.
It depends actually, I've played both male and female characters in many games. My most memorable cross-dressing experiences were in Fallout 2 and Kotor 1&2....

My thoughts exactly :)
Hey, in a 3rd person game, I'd rather be staring at an attractive woman's butt than a man's. IS THAT SO WRONG? *sob*

blotunga: Kotor 1&2....
Did you have to remind me about Mical? Christ! :)
I usually make a "Me" character in almost everything, even if he's an Elf or any race that is similar to human, I'll try to make him about as hard on the eyes as I am. (there's an Avatar thread somewhere I posted one of my Champions Online toons that is a "Me"..*shrug*)

In MMO games I just finished counting and it seems I'm about 50% on either, In Wow (before I left) I had 10 toons on one server exactly split between males and females, all of which I played to 70, except my lone Hordie Rogue, who was mostly just a AH toon... and even he was 40something.
Counting up my CO toons (8) gives me 5 male and 3 female, though two of the female toons were my favorites.

With me I find that sometimes I just have an idea for a Character and it almost chooses the sex, race etc itself. Or a Great name I wanted to use, or in the case of Champions, a look I wanted.

Skyrim- every one of my toons have been male, but there are so many smoking NPCS and I play in first person view about 90% of the time.

Word.
Unfortunately, there's a real dearth of aesthetically pleasing men in games, IMO. If I have to choose between looking at an ugly guy or an attractive woman, I'll pick the woman every time.
There's nothing more fun than playing a bad-ass who happens to be a woman. Tomb Raider, Saint's Row, Mass Effect .... ;-)

KasperHviid: When a game give me the choice between a male and a female avatar, I always choses the female. For some reason, a female avatar feels more natural to me. Which is kind of wierd, with me being a guy.
I know people who like to choose woman characters, because in their own words if they are going to need to watch someone's as for tens of hours - it might as well be womans.

...not going to argue with the logic :D

MadyNora: My male friend played as a girl in MMOs, because other players were a LOT nicer to him this way. He said that playing as a girl in an MMO makes his life a LOT more easy.
oh, i personally learned almost 2 decades ago while playing MUD's, that if someone happens to have womans or otherwise femine sounding name, you should jump into conclusions ;)

Also one nicks which i used back then had apparently way too many vowels for some non-finns to understand i was a guy. got to drop few and the problem was solved.

In RPGs with more than one player character, my party is usually composed of 50% males and 50% females, but if there's only one character, I tend to choose a female one. And I admit for me it's mostly about the looks. If a game has pre-set looks/portraits for specific classes, genders or characters, more often than not, I even select them by looks rather than by their stats and capabilities. I check out all possible looks/portraits and go with the ones I like most, male or female. I set great stock in visuals and I want my characters to look cool to me, whether that means attractive, interesting, sympathetic, funny or even creepy in a fun way.

And most of the male choices just don't do that for me. To me they often look more or less the same, uniform, average joes or bullnecked burly men, with little variety in physique and features, and hardly any handsome, unusual, geeky or actual badass looks. And if I can't play the male characters I'd find interesting, noone I can identify with, look up to or laugh about, I prefer to play females (because I guess I'm shallow enough to always find something interesting and to my liking in them ;) ).

What I don't like is pre-set makeup and specifically "feminine" (read skimpy) clothing for my female characters though. Not that I wouldn't appreciate the option to choose make-up and skimpy clothing whenever I feel like it, but making it a default you can't opt out of is annoying. That's as if choosing a male character would always result in your character getting a mustache, because, "well, what do you want, that's manly, isn't it? All men need to have a mustache to be considered attractive!" :P
