When a game give me the choice between a male and a female avatar, I always choses the female. For some reason, a female avatar feels more natural to me. Which is kind of wierd, with me being a guy.

Now, the strange thing is that I don't feel any inclination towards having titties or wearing frilly dresses in real life. I mean, if I had some overarching desire to be a chick, it would kind of explain it.

I think it has something to do with the distance the player has to the avatar in 3rd person perspective. I wouldn't choose a female avatar in a 1st person shooter. Another perspective is that players always take the role of radically different personas. Theres a world of distance between the psychopath killer in Hotline Miami, the macho hero in Duke Nukem and the naive boy in Little Inferno. Yet, as a player, I can effortlessly swap between those roles. Since there is such great distance between who the player are and the role he plays in the game, it might not be all that mysterious if some player prefer avatars of the opposite sex.

But generally, I prefer games that doesn't let the player choose between different avatars. I think the strength of games such as Duke Nuk'em 3D, Portal and They Bleed Pixels is that the games creators has decided on a single main character, created specifically for the games universe.
I'm big into the Hoyle pc games and anyone who plays them knows about their way cool 'face maker' so you can design your own player. Well this is the face I use on ALL of my Hoyle games. Took me a long time to get it just right but when I did I went with it and haven't changed it in years.

for mmo i prefer to play as a female. wester archtype character are too brutish. plus people too tend aren't agresive.
It is actually completely normal for heterosexual males to prefer female characters: http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2014/05/13/world_of_warcraft_gender_switching_why_men_choose_female_avatars.html

I like the freedom in games, where I can live out my fantasies, which are very extreme - I like to be either tall and buff man or a little, cute creature. Those games are the best.
So when given a choice, you prefer to oggle, dress and undress female bodies on your screen instead of male ones? That's a shocking confession for an (assumedly) heterosexual male gamer indeed! ;)
I don't judge.. out loud at least.

Matewis: and some games have characters of indeterminate gender:
"are you really a woman?"
"why do you ask?"
"please face towards the scanner"

"cause no trouble"
Shocking indeed.
My male friend played as a girl in MMOs, because other players were a LOT nicer to him this way. He said that playing as a girl in an MMO makes his life a LOT more easy.

I on the other hand can only role-play properly is I can play as a girl. I said role-play, wich means I'm perfectly OK with male protagonists in non-RPGs, but in RPG-s, the whole role-play feeling is murdered for me, if I'm forced to play as the opposite gender (which happens quite often unfortunately :( ).
I can't role-play as a guy, no matter how hard I try >_<
This is exactly like me too. I will almost always choose a female avatar if such are available in games. I also usually play female characters in pen & paper RPGs too. (I've never played an MMO game, but if I did I know I'd choose a female).

oh seriously it is more easy esp if you know how to play the card. back here +5 yrs ago where webcam aren't common and majority of player spread out hode (its what we call men that role playing as female not me, i openly stated i'm a male) are quite commonly involving scam ranging from game voucher item and so on. the pros usually have some female friend to back'em up for him if someone asking for a phone.
