The OP brings up a great point.

Thanks to the Internet, we consume news and opinions on an hourly, if not minutes, interval. Taking a break from all of it really does uplift one's spirits.

Oddly, when I'm not on the internet I sort of go through withdrawal.

Red_Avatar: do you think you'd be happier if you weren't constantly reminded that there's many MANY people out there that really lack any notion of logic and have spades of ignorance and yet believe their opinion is flawless even though a blind hermit could spot holes in it from miles away?
Yeah, it would be nice if I didn't have to see your posts.

Regarding Youtube comments (and online newspapers sites, among other sites), those kind of comments always make me remember this comic: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19.
Beer.
the internet is full of crap. one of these days, someone's going to hit a giant toilette handle, and all the people who post stuff day to day are going to be sucked into this giant sewer, where we will mutate into a new speicies of net baby's.

my grandmother however will avoid all this, becuase believe it or not she has never owned a computer her whole entire life.

Khadgar42: I am seriously pissed by the fact that you talk about retro gamers and older people like they are something special, something superior. Like "The Chosen Ones©" the "Master Race" stuff.
I think you read a tiny bit too much into what we're saying. They (well, we) are not "special", but we do have some things that set us apart from other people. Every demographic does. That's more or less the definition of demographic.
avatar
Khadgar42: Just to give you a hint:
Every f*cking day I'm working with kids that are at least 1/3 of my age and thus I consider myself some very old bastard.
I had more profound conversation in facebook and in real life with young people than with most of my colleagues that are either the same age or older.
Yes, and so what? I never said anything like "all old people" (I'm 35, by the way) "are better at everything than any young people". I know plenty of intelligent and civilized young people. However, I come across many more who are neither. Same as people at any age, really.

Khadgar42: Some of the kids are douche-bags, but before blaming them start looking at the mirror. It's our generation that taught the kids how to behave and since according to you we just failed utterly we are the one to blame. So go out and change something. Don't have kids? Well, start making them and stop being a hypocrite.
Have children of your own? Teach them some respect and humility, and pleasse please teach them not whine about the new generations after them, that will obviously be so much more insulting and stupid whatsoever.
Again, you're taking this discussion WAAAY too seriously. Still...

No, I will not take a look in the mirror, because I refuse to accept personal responsibility for the way other people raise their kids. I teach my son to act respectful towards others, both online and in real life.

Khadgar42: As far as I know, you have no demographic how old these users who leaving those ridiculously stupid comments there are.
Todays youth (at least in Europe) has more freedom and less responsibilities than ever.
Mothers paying for the kids' iPhone, buying them Call of Duty and other bullshitty games.
Giving them free reign over the PC and TV in their own room.
Neglected by they parents and oversaturated by this consumerism they don't know how to behave properly.

You know what, if you really feel happy about that, go on, blame them. It's always easy to blame the kid with the foul mouth for your bad experience in the internet.
But you are not much better than them in any way. In my opinion you are much worse.
Now you're just inventing things. If you want a discussion, look at what people are saying, and respond to that. Don't go off on a tangent and rant and rave about things they never even came close to saying.

Other than that, the first paragraph I generally agree with. The second is "padded room" ridiculous.

Khadgar42: Thank you, I needed to let off some steam.
Happiness restored, this thread really helped :D
Don't mention it. Feel free to go completely apeshit any time, only please, do it somewhere else ;-)

(Sheesh! The people you run into online sometimes!)
Yeah, people are cunts. It's best to just ignore things like Youtube comments and move on.

Red_Avatar: Simple: avoid forums, avoid chat rooms, avoid Youtube comments ... in fact, avoid anything online where you can read people's opinions. And news, avoid the news.
Pretty much.

I have basically stopped posting on forums other than this one. You might see a rare post on Steam or Blues News but for the most part I have shut it all down because arguing on the internet is a waste of time, a stresser and a sign of depression and boredom.

I would ditch GOG too but I need some kind of outlet. I wish I could quit cold turkey, maybe someday.
Be modest.
I've been avoiding the news for years now, and I do think it makes me happier. But forums? I'm not sure. I frequent forums because I enjoy it. I learn new things, I see people helping others, and I sometimes enjoy arguing with people. These are communities, and if you don't like a particular one you don't have to frequent it. But much of the time on GOG, Bjorn3D, Hexus.net, even Steam Gifts, I enjoy what I read more than I suffer. Even complaint threads like these, of which there are many, can make you think. When I was on the writing scene, most writing forums I frequented were pretty nice (not that they didn't have jerks).

Sure there are always annoying posts and people, and I'm not sure why anyone (and by that I mean Wishbone) would think geeks are rational and patient. Threads about Steam on GOG, threads about Windows 8, threads about Apple products, all of them are full of geeky opinions not worth reading. (And I don't think it was much better on usenet many years ago). I ignore a lot of threads, skim a lot of others. I sometimes dismiss posts I start writing because I don't think they'd really add anything.

But the short of it is, I think I enjoy online communities more than I suffer from them.
Actually I love the rants and trolling and immature gibbering the internet is known for. I just don't take is serious. What have I to lose? Nothing, this is the internet. It's not like I have those guys knocking at my door and wanting to talk to me about how 4chan will be my saviour.

It can be irritating if a good thread gets derailed by pointless trolling, but that happens here not that often. It is unfortunate that the forum quality has dropped so significantly, but that just means I care less about most threads.

I still get enough good gaming recommendations out of here, so I'm all good.
