I think the biggest thing about Point and Clicks as a genre is that the possibilities are virtually endless. For example, there is only so much you can do with first-person shooters and as such, they tend to play a lot alike. Granted you may have a novelty here or there, stealth mechanics, unique weapons, but the basic game is the same. Same with platformers, only so much one can do, for the most part.
P&C's can have any sort of story and are only limited by the creativity and imagination of the author. They can be funny, sad, scary. They can be a platform for multiple puzzles and/or slices of life.
