Here's the thread from our last discussion on this: http://www.gog.com/forum/general/martial_arts_movies_suggestions

Always on the lookout for more, so I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

EDIT: Oh - my top suggestion would be "The Evil Cult" a jet li film that is really not like any other martial arts film I've seen.

Adzeth: Jade Warrior is not what you're looking for.
It just needed to be mentioned. For reasons.
I always felt that I was missing something with Jade Warrior. I'm still not sure what kind of film it really is.

Note the very definitive post that simply concluded that thread.

How so ?

I hate martial arts movies and kung fu stuff as much as I hate anime and superheroes (a bias which makes me a great source for suggestions in all these domains, yes), so I'm always interested in exemples of these that are "not like any others". I might check that movie, but could you already, without spoilers, give an idea of what sets it apart from the genre archetypes ?

If you hate martial arts films then it probably still isn't for you. However here are the things that I think make it special:

1) it is adapted from a novel, which has a very rich plot involving a number of political players, and various factions
2) they throw this together with magic swords and supernatural kung fu powers. They depart from reality almost completely.
3) They then translated it really badly, such that the subtitles are so insane they are both funny, and also leave you often having to work out what's going on mostly from people's actions, with the subtitles as a clue.
4) Because of the intricate plot, they actually have to cram quite a lot of content into it, so it's quite a fast paced film. This is partly why they had such difficulty translating it I think.
5) By the time you finish the film (on first watching it), you will probably think "That was actually quite good, I just couldn't really follow it". After a few more watches you better understand it, and realise just how different it is.
wow. noone's mentioned ? :

Kung Pow : Enter The Fist!

Kung Fu : The TV Series

Not really Kung Fu, but has martial arts as a feature : Remo Williams : The Adventure Begins!

Yeah, OK, tongue planted firmly in cheek, but still good fun :P
The Raid - good action movie from indonesia. Some intense fight scenes.

Powerman, Wheels on Meals - Fun slapstick Jackie Chan movie.
For a Jackie Chan fillm I recommend Drunken Master.
well let's see off the top of my head.
The One armed swordsman
Once upon a time in china 1 and 2
Jackie Chan the legend of Drunken master
a bit more on the silly side Iron Monkey
The Jet Li as Wong Fei Hung series: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103285/

Stephen Chow is known more as a comedian. He's the only person in Asia who can make me laugh really hard. His 80s-90s shows are the best.

I generally dislike these newer artsy-fartsy kung fu movies with levitating show-offs which take themselves too seriously (Crouching Tiger, Flying Daggers, Farting Angels...).

One older one I like quite a bit is the "Ninja in the Dragon's Den" since it has my favorite Japanese martial arts actor, and it shows some Chinese sword vs. Japanese sword action.

mighty.ape.acct: Jackie Chan's Who am I?
- I love the last fight scene (on the rooftop) especially
That is a good scene.

There is a Korean flick I am trying to remember the name/spelling of. It is something like Akarhn or something. It's a bit superhero martial arts, and recent-ish. It is something of a comedy, and I quite enjoyed it all around. If someone knows then name for that one let me know.

That is one movie I kinda wish I could unwatch. Or more specifically unhear. Maybe subtitled would be better, but Amazon had it dubbed, and it was one of the most annoying things I have put my ears trough.
Anything Bruce Lee or Bruce Li.

Even when wearing blue-white glasses, I have to agree. The director or whoever who came with the idea of combining Chinese and Finnish folklore together had an ambitious idea, but it didn't quite work out as it should. And even if it had, that movie definitely belongs to the artsy-fartsy floating fighters kung fu movies which I just condemned earlier.

The Chinese chick looked quite hot, though. Maybe just for that reason I still have the movie in my recording box.

I cannot agree with you more on that. That is why I'm not really the biggest on floaty Jet Li. I like some of his films, but sometimes he seriously just floats around jumping on walls, which is not what I want in my Kung Fu.
