I would gladly play that game, but I'm not able to install it. While I can download the installer it's broken and unable to install anything.
Feels like a typical EA product. Considering this is free to play, I not going to be disappointed in any way.
I played the free to play game with 2 characters... 1 to level 24-ish and another to level 32. The story content is really awesome in this game. The game balancing to me leaves a lot to be desired as is the combat which always felt half-baked. The best free to play tip is to complete all the side quests per planet. Don't level up to the point that the quest goes grey because the exp gains will be almost nothing.

If you can, do heroics and make use of your flash points as they give out some big exps but it also means grouping as the quests are always tuned to be tougher.

Lastly, space missions are almost free exp because they aren't really tough. I don't know if they fixed a glitch on it though. If you have companions who are using skills like researching (forgot what they call this), and you do a space mission the moment they come back to give you the rewards they found, the frame rate will be broken and unplayable, thereby losing your 1 allotment of space missions.

If you need a one time EXP boost, the easy way is to drop by every planet. Visiting a location for the first time nets a 1000-ish EXP boost if you have the perks activated on your character.

Last time I checked, they were consolidating the Asian servers. I think that the lifespan of this game isn't as long as people think. If you're enjoying the game, make sure you finish the quests.

What I do to circumvent the lack of the tool bars is by knowing the hot keys to the actual skills menu. Once I was familiar with it, I could hit the key and scroll using the mouse wheel to get to the power that I wanted to use if I ran out of space on the tool bar.

SWTOR's community is not noob friendly in my experience. If you need help, be sure to get a buddy you know around and don't ask the community for anything.

For me, TOR felt like a missed opportunity. It could have been several good single-player games, or a good mmo, but as it is they tried to do everything, and failed.

The travel times and respawning filler mobs detract from the single-player part, while the huge amount of dialogue and the fact your story quests and most of the rest are meant to be soloed detract from the multiplayer aspect.

Plus, I absolutely hate the combat system, it's the most boring one I've ever seen in a game.
From your (pretty limited) pool of abilities, you just have to figure out the best offensive rotation, then use that all the time, on every single enemy, while using your defensive cooldowns when appropriate. BORING!
And don't even get me started on the 1.5 sec global cooldown thing, which ruins any sense of action or fluidity in combat, and is probably the worst gameplay idea ever.

The fact that people actually seem to like it, since it's present in several other MMOs, completely baffles me, tbh.
And the bugs and glitches... oh those bugs and glitches...

oasis789: I tried it for a bit, the nickel and diming you for basic stuff like hotkey bars and crafting etc really diminished my enthusiasm to find out what's happening next in the sith inquisitor storyline.
This is my problem with any f2p game. I can't hack being nickeled and dimed for basics or anything really.

Maybe I am sort of old school or something when it comes to MMO games but to me either the game is good enough to be worth a sub granting complete access to all content and features or it isn't. I think the problem many MMOs have encountered since WoW is that most of them are not good enough. People have spoken with their wallets and refused to shell out 15 bucks a month for them. Yet WoW customers don't seem to have any problem paying monthly. I can only conclude that unlike players of other games, WoW customers are satisfied with their game at least enough to value it at 15 bucks a month.

Anyway, I won't wander too much further off-topic here into the whole f2p vs subscription model discussion but I wanted to bring up why f2p games don't really tempt me, even ones I suspect would be fun to try out like this one. If was to want to play SWOTOR, I'd shell out the monthly for the full experience. I hate stuff being missing, I would absolutely hate the XP cut and any other stuff cut.

What I would try is an unlimited trial for say the first 20 levels like WoW offers. That lets me play unhindered in any way, trying any class I want, etc. in the starting areas and get a good feel for whether I like the game enough to pay for it. If the game can stand on its own two feet then I might just pony up with the monthly. If not, sorry but no cigar.

SWTOR had a limited trial up to level 15 I think at one point in time. It didn't last. WoW subs are decreasing too, so the age of people paying for the subs are slowly fading away. Didn't Guild Wars go Free to Play too?

They didn't change their model. You buy the game and then play for free. They do have a cash shop... so some may see this as a move to F2P... but you still have to buy the game. The difference here, is that you can get the game on sale, so some people will pay more or less than others.

It's an admirable model. I think Secret World also went that route.
Maybe it's because all I'm interested in is questing to the end of the story, but the free to play limitations don't really bother me. Someone mentioned hotbars and travel but one hot bar is fine for me and you can travel plenty.

I dunno... I don't play MMOs, so I have no real point of reference. As a solo game it's basically KotOR with a ton of trash mobs, which I find tolerable.
Played a couple of month last winter, enjoyed but at last I got bored. Usually I don't like mmorpgs, only played this one because SW:Kotor is still my favourite game.
It's a very good game for his genre, but I after I've finished all the story mission (Jedi Sentinel) I lost all the motivation to go on.. Maybe in the future I'll do another class with another storyline, but for now I don't have any wish to do that. :)
I was going to play this and then rift went F2P.

From your description, Rift's F2P model is much more user friendly, I cant think of any hinderance off hand apart from maybe the Auction House, you have to have a certain level of "loyalty" to use it, to stop gold farmers/sellers buggering stuff up.

XP and quest accessibility afaik is the same for all players.

Just to clarify, quest access is the same for everyone. It's just a 25% XP reduction that impacts me as a solo player.

Ah, OK, well XP is the same for all in Rift. There are XP boosting potions in the Item Shop, I think patrons get a discount on items there but I dont know how much.

You can also use the XP boosts to try and cover for the 25% XP penalty. If you wanted, you could also pay for any single item in the game and be granted preferred status. You'll get the shuttle inventory among other perks that should make your experience a bit better.
If you enjoy the game and aren't completely strapped for cash, I really suggest getting a month of subscription. A friend of mine claims that between the two versions of the game, free to play is really quite inferior. I wouldn't know myself; I always subscribed back when I played.
