Smannesman: I was playing on this server until some jackass ruined the experience by killing me twice and messing with my property.
I'll just go back to playing on my private server with the guys I trust.
What were the names of them?
I don't know if putting on whitelist is the right way.

The main problem with this server is / was the lack of players. Putting on whitelist wont make it more popular. Whitelist is perhaps an option for more populated servers....that have their players anyway so to speak.

The funny thing about griefing is how it can make a community come together. You noticed how you all started flocking back here just because I mentioned griefers :-P

I am not saying griefers are good.....but on a PvP server open to the public you COULD expect your place to be obliterated. This should just make you think about the construction of your place.

I know many like to build big flashy stuff out in the open. That is not always a good idea. At least use sturdy material in that case...

When playing on theese kind of servers I tend to have many places and hide them as good as possible.

I do agree that posting on the Minecraft forum perhaps was not the best of ideas. I think griefers are probably prowling thoose forums...just waiting for a server that says "vanilla server - no whitelist". It is a shame that this game seem to atract a lot of derranged kids.

Again....griefers, although they should hang from trees they are to some extent part of a "PvP=On, Whitelist=Off, open server". Although harsh this is the setting that I probably want to play. I don't want to build huge cities that just get bigger and bigger and bigger until it is all a city.....I don't think the game was meant to be played this way. Remember this is "survival" mode.....

If you know what you are doing you can build in a way to minimize greifing. At least you can minimize the amount and also make the griefer work for it.....

I will continue to post ads about this server. Probably even on the Minecraft forums. At least until we get a few new players....although interest here already seems to be stacking up a bit....so thats nice....

Remember that version 1.4 probably is out soon so then we will be starting from scratch anyway....(??)....right?

=========================

Just posting a direct link to the IRC web-chat for GOG....where the Minecraft players and the server hoster also recides:

Work together people! :-P

Aatami: What were the names of them?
There was just the one, it's a very very quiet (but still laggy) server after all.
And I don't think I should mention his name just because I can't stand the guy.
He was invited onto the server by friends (he's not a GOGite) so apparently some people can stand him.

Even if player damage is enabled, which I don't consider PvP, I don't think you should go around attacking someone who clearly has no interest in fighting a lame pretend war with you.
And survival mode has nothing to do with PvP, it's PvE where the E should stand for Environment.

And lastly, just because people like arguments and discussions doesn't mean they'll start playing Minecraft (again).

Hmm. I invited two friends to play. If you tell me the name, and it is one that I invited then I can tell them to stop. Was it Mason or Blinkcage?

Smannesman,
I can agree with you to some extent. When I was talking about "survival" I was not primarily talking about the PvP option though but rather the fact that many servers out there just tend to be huge cities that are as far from a "survival" setting of trying to stay alive against creepers and all other nasty monsters (or PvE as you might call it).

What I meant was that servers where you start in a huge safe city and just start building and building and building without risking anything....is not really survival mode.

PvP does have a role to play also...although I don't consider it primary. I don't think I will attack another player unprovoked but it does add some real danger to it all doesn't it...

I think when a PvP:er turns into a griefer...that is when he needs to be removed from the server. When does the PvP:er cross the line? Well...we can all agree that this is popular....but lets agree on theese things at least:

1) Someone killing you multiple times. Especially at spawn....
2) Someone much stronger than you who is or is not even teamed up to kill you.
3) Someone demolishes a lot of your work.
4) Someone who destroys and steal from other not even for personal gain but just for fun....

I think 1 and 2 are pretty easy to spot....while 3 and 4 are more of an interpretation.

Again lets just agree on that it is complicated and then we all know this game is not completely done yet. Especially the multiplayer with the default rules does not seem to be completely balanced yet as it is pretty much griefers heaven....

superfly, I don't think you understand the reason behind the Official Unofficial GOG Game servers; they're a place to promote community interaction and have a good time. We don't really care how many people are on, especially when the influx of people leads to us having less fun.

I for one am for enforcing a whitelist.
I can understand that....but can you also understand that when I play many hours straight and no one else logs on I start thinking to maybe look for another server....

I mean....it is supposed to be a MP server right...

Sure ...I know...in Minecraft the others don't have to be logged in at the same time as you....as you can see what they have done anyway....still I don't want to play at a desolate place....

What is your Minecraft username by the way?

(Let me just clarify that I am not against whitelist generally....I just think this server is too desolate at times.....and that would just kill it further. If everyone could help in getting more players maybe things would change....)

I would join up to the server, as I was not able to install my own (Shit Java Server, that needs X running on Linux, a console server would be enought and would run much faster) :)

I would like the idea of registration or whitelisting, to keep the griefers out. The main reason, why I do only play locally is the case that other people are destroying your buildings.

Actually, you don't need X. I've setup a server several times and never needed it.
You could also try which is a custom server that allows you to easily install many fun mods (such as [url=http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Runecraft]Runecraft and Minecart Mania)

uhh, will try that.
WIth the original server, I always got error messages and it did not run at all. Maybe Bukkit is much better :)
I don't know why you can't live with the idea that what you build could be destroyed and that it at least it is not forever. Servers DO get started from scratch once in a while. All depending on crashes or updates of server version for example.

Personally I would like to start from scratch after a while. This is not Sim City....well at least not SMP.... (Survival Multi Player).

People messing with my stuff in a negative manner was the reason I quit playing on the server in the first place. I think it was out of line you posting a community server on the main minecraft forums when it was primarily for goggers but I don't run the server so thats up to emualynk if he thinks the same or not.

Some people just enjoy the building aspect of the game without expecting whatever they spend hours building to be ruined by some one who thinks its funny. That said if you don't want to be safe in the built up area when your playing, the world is huge just head in a direction for a while and you will be back to surviving outside the relative safety of the built up area.

So it is out of line to try and save the server from completely dying?

Besides...all of you that don't play here anymore....why are you posting?

Ok...I'm gonna make a "cow-turn" now. Whether it was right or wrong it is psycologically unsound for me to take this amount of bashing (wasn't pretty in the IRC chat just now) for something like this so I will apologize for posting in the Minecraft forum. I didn't realise so many still had such an interest in the server as I hadn't seen anyone on for 2 weeks...

But anyway...just to be friend with everyone I have already removed the post from the Minecraft forums.

I hope the griefer will not come back.

If they do and if they happen to destroy parts of your building I am willing in help with rebuilding to a certain extent.

Even as I do apologize for my actions I must also say I am dissapointed on how some people here are treating me because of it...

Also it is a shame one cannot post about a game server to the official Minecraft forums in fear of griefers. Says something about some of the players of this game unfortunately....

So, i'm bloody lost and I need to find my way back to spawn. Is there a cartograph that allows to you view the maps on servers? I don't want to just kill myself because i've built something where I am and I want to be able to find my way back.
