It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).

michaelleung: Nah, I get that all the time. I can't see to change my content server location though.

It may be that Steam is moving towards using a content delivery network (CDN). CDNs have servers all over the world so this can result in significantly better speeds than from traditional centralised servers. Using a CDN would also explain the removal of the download region selector since CDNs handle that automatically. Certainly for me download speeds have been exponentially faster with the new client.

New Steam beta messes up my downloads, they're way slower (possibly because of the lack of content servers), randomly pauses my downloads and won't resume unless I restart the client, so I went back to the old one. SALVATION.

Aren't they already halfway there? I know Steam has got a server cluster in Sweden.
Otherwise, I'm happy with the new client, although it has a few bugs. For example, the in-game achievement / announcement overlay often shows up as an empty box for me.
I also miss some better achievement features, particularly for browsing other users achievements. It would be nice with a separate achievement tab.

Not sure about the new Steam, I seam to be scrolling down pages a lot more than I used to and it's not all that smooth.
Not tried downloading anything yet though.
As I've said before, I'm not even touching that beta again until they bring the compact view back. The most useful view mode in the entire client and they get rid of it? Why!?
I really do wonder at the thought processes they must go through when designing.

Hey. That compact view is pretty useful. Never found it before. I better enjoy it while it lasts then :P
Yay for creative thought processes!

I'm having the same problem. I tried re-installing the client from the main Steam page, thinking that it would restore the old version, but it gave the the beta version again AND it wiped out all of my installed games (and save files, apparently). Looks like I have to play through the first 3/4ths of HL2 yet AGAIN. And re-installing all of my games sucks due to the random download suspensions that have to be manually restarted.

Steam Beta is like that special mode in Windows which makes all icons 4 times as big and all text bold and huge. Basically, Steam beta is Steam for 60+ year old gamers with bad eye sight. If they manage to make the text a lot smaller and reduce the rest, it might actually look good. Right now, it's so bad that the names of several of my games get cut off. For example, I can't see from the name whether a game is Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter or Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2.

That depends on how you have the Steam layout organized. I have it set on the Details view, which shows the entire title for AAAAA!!! A Reckless Disregard for Gravity.

That's the problem I had, it's more work to look for what you want. That alone made my downgrade back to original, which looks neater and cleaner.

Anyone else having big problems with the ingame overlay? I don't really use it often but everything seems to show up blank. When I get one of the popups, I'm never sure if I have a message or if someone is just loading a new game
I never used the overlay in Steam. I like the idea but when you got a whole load of friends, it's going to be more than a little distracting to constantly get PMed while in a game.

This is a known issue. It didn't happen before and will probably be fixed in the next update. Either way, it's not just something on your end.

AndrewC: I'm really liking it so far; a nice addition is that you can also customize which jumplists get displayed on the icon in Windows 7.

You can already set the jumplist preferences in current Steam.

I did, but I went back to the classic version.
