Hi there all.

I was wondering. If I bought a 360 game controller would that work well to play games on my Mac via bluetooth? I heard some where that somebody did this but this was just random news on the net. I can't really zoom in to know better. If it is possible, I would buy it.

So any thoughts or help on this would be great.

I think you can in fact play with a 360 controller on a Mac, however I've not tested it myself.

- which is a joystick/gamepad programming controller - lists Xbox 360 as a supported device (bottom of the page) if you install certain [url=http://tattiebogle.net/index.php/ProjectRoot/Xbox360Controller/OsxDriver]drivers. Apparently the wireless Xbox 360 controller uses some sort of proprietary signal, not bluetooth, so you need to buy a special Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows which are attached to your one of your Mac's USB ports. Those aforementioned drivers should be able to run the wireless XBox 360 controller on your Mac through the receivers.

P.S. ControllerMate is useful if your game does not normally support gamepads, but you would like to use a gamepad anyway. It is not necessary if the games you want to play naturally support the gamepad you want to use.

So If I get this device, would it run naitive on my mac or would I need to be in Windows? The reason I am asking is because of the driver. I will after my next class check the device out more to see how to run it. So if you can answer before my next post, cool. If not, I think I can post my thoughts on it. Thanks again for pointing me in a direction that I can try.

According to the Tattiebogle website (the developer of the driver), the downloadable driver should allow you to run the wireless receiver + wireless XBox 360 controller natively on your Mac without needing Windows. The wireless receiver is named "Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows", but that's just the name of the device. This 3rd party driver is supposed to be able to support the receiver and Xbox 360 controller on your OS X Mac as though they were native to OS X. So yes, with this driver you should be able to use these devices in Mac OS X without needing Windows. At least that's the claim, as I said, I've not used it myself, but I have seen others talk about using Xbox 360 controllers on their Macs so I think it will probably work.

What, Mac useres can operate more than one button? Maybe you should start with what the rest of the world calls a real mouse before aiming for the heavy and trying to operate a 360 pad.

Scnr :-)
PS3 gamepads: Dualshock 3 and Sixaxis use bluetooth :P

I realize this is an attempt at humor but you do realize that this joke hasn't worked for over a decade now? It may be a goldie, but is definitely an oldie ... I suppose that this is a forum for Good Old Games, so we might as well trot out the Good Old Jokes too. :)

No preference in systems I see. :)

Well looking at my MacBook Pro... it still only has one button, but can do more with it than Windows does with 2 or 3 ;)

i hate hate hate dualshock controllers the left analogue is in the wrong place for modern gaming causing my hand to cramp after 30 minutes of play time and the triggers are the wrong way round to get a grip on them without 3rd party addons!

One design to rule them all.
To be fair, it's all a matter of preference.
I was using Dualshocks from the era of the PSX and never had an xbox so I prefer the Sony layout ;)
Each one to his own mate.

Cheers

From what I have readso far the 360 pad is easily the controller that is recognized by most games while many others are not. Can't say too much about Playstation pads since I do not know one single person who uses these.

On Windows, where XInput is available by default, yes. And that's only recently, before that became available on PCs, pretty much all DirectInput devices were equally supported (I don't know about the PS3 controller, but I suspect its drivers register it as a DirectInput device like most other gamepads and joysticks).

This topic was about Mac OS though, not Windows. And I have little knowledge of controller support on that platform, the only thing I remember is GameSprockets from Mac OS classic.

They made drivers for the PS3 pads and they work flawlessy, pairing on bt or via usb, can even emulate the XInput like a 360 pad so on Windows it'a all a matter of preference which layout you like better :P

yeah it really is though I do recommend borrowing one from a friend to try out the trigger change is a nice thing for comfort the thumb stick position is purely personal though I really do find my hand cramps quickly when i'm playing infamous or one of the uncharted games
Thank you all including the back from the day PC gamer who took a jab at my rib. :p

Will be looking at the two suggestions on here at my local shop and see which one is the cheaper and faster to buy.

Thanks again to you all for the help. GoG.com is the best!!
