I find I have to be extremely careful opening links and reading comments nowadays. I know what the problem is though and how it can be fixed, but the fix too is very dangerous.

The problem is, I haven't started with the 'Game of Thrones' or 'The Walking Dead' series, but I want to and that means I have to tip toe everywhere I go to avoid spoilers :P Most people on commenting threads are considerate, but of course, not all. Sometimes the spoilers can be very subtle. For example (possible spoiler ahead), I saw this imgur post recently with a photo of two characters from the series, and the top comment although it did not state it directly, led me to believe the one character is well-liked and had been killed off.

The fix is obvious : start watching it, but that is also dangerous, in of itself, as is always the case when you find yourself caught up in a new series. For the moment I am content with watching Mulder and Scully's, uhm, adventures with the CSM.

Am I alone in this dilemma? People always try to get me into new series, and I always fight the urge to dive into it based purely on the significant time drain that results (X-files, Battlestar Galactica, Big bang theory, and so on ) :P

The fix is simple, young padawan : Only take interest in older or less popular series. Thus, you are immune to the meme-spoiler (not the targeted spoiler, sure, but this one is easier to avoid : Simply don't talk about it and avoid internet searches until you're done with the series)
It was quite easy to avoid spoilers on Buffy when I watched it in 2013 ^^

Kardwill, who has no interest in GOT nor TWD, but has been completely spoiled about them anyway

So let me get this straight , you say its dangerous because Comment sections spoil plot elements from TV shows or anything?

I thought this thread was about you being hacked or getting a pesky Malware (My experiance with iminent the fucking evil shit)
The library can be a dangerous place, as well. I got the first couple GoT novels from my local library and it totally spoilered the Red Wedding for me in the TV show.
Ah yes, spoilers. No, they don't affect me and I have enjoyed many movies, books and videogames which had their surprises spoiled from before and I didn't feel like I lost anything. I mean, we all know that Dr. Jekyll was Mr. Hyde, but I still found the book very enjoyable. If anything, I would say that the opposite is true for me; awesome things happening might actually lead me to watch/read/play something rather than saying "yeah, maybe, in a 100 years".

Congrats to watching Buffy. We also (re-)watched Buffy and Angel (I made a list to get the timetable right) in 2012/13 and it was absolutely fantastic. The original version is soo much better than the German dubbed. It's also a great series for watching several times - some quirky remark from the early seasons often turns out quite prophetic when you now what happens a few years later (Buffy: "What are you doing here?" Faith: "I'm waiting for dawn").

Currently we are watching Heroes. BSG/Caprica is in the pipeline. We started to watch BSG when it was new on German TV but they totally messed up the order making it incomprehendable.

I nearly gave up watching series in German TV because they often mess up like this and I'm getting increasingly annoyed of the censoring and the Germann voiceover.

Yeah, it can build expectations that render a fiction or a game more enjoyable. The suspense from an expected "surprise" can be quite fun in itself. When will it happen? How? Why? When flat-out surprise can feel like it came out of nowhere.

Yeah, I started watching it again simply for nostalgia's sake, and I really enjoyed it. Far better than in my memories. Good, dynamic characters, a very solid story construction, seasons and arcs with a start, an end and a point, and a willingness to blow up the statu-quos and have the situation evolve. And good dialogues, too, when I switched from the butchered French dubbing to the original version.

My 35 years old friends are making fun of me, but I'm a fan :)

Well the best surprises are those when you facepalm and say "Yes, of course! I should have seen that coming. Now it all makes sense". Those are, of course, the hardest to implement. There will aways people very observant and clever that will say "I've seen that coming for a mile - boooring" and others that don't get it and call it cheap trick.

Actually, it's dangerous because of your rep number.

You really only have two options: either read the books/comics in order to familiarize yourself with the story, thus freeing you from the worries of spoiler-land, or just stay away from previews, reviews, and forums... especially forums and comment sections. There's not a GOT video on the internet that is not filled with dozens of Asshats waiting to spoil the entire series for unwary travelers.

I wouldn't necessarily say that the internet is turning into a dangerous place... not so much as a very stupid place. Then again, stupid people doing stupid things can indeed become very dangerous. Proceed with caution.
Side note: My favorite so far is the CD sound track for Star Wars 1: Phantom Menace, which was released 2 weeks before the film. It contained tracks named such as "Anakin Defeats Sebulba", "Qui-Gon's Noble End" and "Qui-Gon's Funeral" :)

And Wikipedia. The English Wikipedia at least has a "Warning, major plot details follow" in many places (though not everywhere). The German version often blatantly tell you the whole story with twists and ending in the first paragraph without any warning. Like "X is a movie that is famous for the plot twist that A is really B...."
