Thanks for the reply Coelocanth, I actually agree with you that Pacific Rim had more spectacular monster fights then the recent Godzilla reboot. The reason I asked was that the Transformers movies although fun for some are just like an amusement park ride where the thrill is gone once you walk out of the theater but the movie still made like over a 100 million dollars opening weekend and is the number one movie in America. I don't understand why people don't swarm to watch more smart summer movie fare like the upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes instead of just going for mindless pop corn flicks. People flock to watch them every year and probably that is why they keep making them because anything original or risky when occasionally successful is considered to be a fluke by Hollywood like Inception or Gravity for example.

I think many people don't want anything challenging when they look for entertainment in the theater. I believe most people are truly looking for mindless action/fun. And the Transformers movie delivers in spades.

Interesting you mention the new Planet of the Apes movie. Only about 5 minutes ago I asked the kids if they want to go see it tomorrow. I'm fairly stoked for this one, as it looks pretty darned good.

I certainly understand what you mean but why can't we have both in a summer movie i.e. good character development/story as well as spectacular action set pieces. To me it feels like a lot of people just settle for mediocrity instead of something both thought provoking and fun. It is exactly the reason why I have no desire to see Transformers but am eagerly anticipating the new Apes film because the first movie genuinely surprised me, as I wasn't really expecting much from it other then a mindless cash grab off an old well known franchise.

But surprisingly the movie had everything I want from a good film i.e. great character work/story and some great action beats all combined to provide a fantastic experience. Also another good example of a Summer movie done right is X-Men: Days of Future Past which I thought was the best of the franchise so far. :)
