ddickinson: I have no real problem with movie adaptations, as long as they try to stay true to the book
Sorry for necroing, but I'm just finishing The Hunger Games audiobook, and I've seen the movie before, and I realised something (which I knew before, it just came into clearer focus), so figured since we discussed movie adaptations here I'll post in this thread.
I find the difference between a movie and a book to be interesting, and this actually adds to my enjoyment of both. It's possible that it's because I see a story as fluid in my own writing. There's nothing "canon" about a particular version, so I'm not offended by changes, I see them as a necessary part of adaptation. Noting the changes and speculating on what these particular changes were made is interesting, and I think also beneficial to understanding story development.
Sure, I might consider a particular version better. In the case of The Hunger Games I feel that the book is stronger. But still, the difference is not something I see as negative.
By the way, this also goes for movie remakes. Seeing a different realisation of the same concept is always interesting, even if they differ considerably, even if I don't consider the remake as good as the original.
