It activates as "re-launch" and probably has to do with the massive load of DLC they've been pumping out for the game.

Thanks to ddickson for hosting this giveaway! Great to see the various discussions that have evolved and the mostly positive support.

My favorite games are adventures. The story is the main draw. I also like hybrids like System Shock 2, Realms of the Haunting, and Deux Ex that combine genres.

Not in (I think it's too late anyway), but thanks again!

For the record, I like pillows, popcorn and Studio Ghibli. :-)

There are several melee builds you can make with the amazon in Diablo 2
There is also the Assassin. She can dual-wield claws and i think daggers aswell. Or just go axe/sword and shield while using traps on the side.

awalterj: Amazons can carry swords but they don't have any skills in their skill tree that add elemental damage to sword attacks or other one-handed melee weapons, only to spears, javelins and bows. So it seems pointless to go down the one-handed melee weapon route but there is a way to build a sword & shield (or axe/mace/flail & shield) amazon: you'll have to put all your skill points into the passive tree, maxing out the valkyrie, critical strike and defense skills until you are a real shield maiden that is so hard to hit that most monsters would die of old age before they could land a single blow on you - but of course you'll compassionately put them out of their misery first.
This is probably one of the most unorthodox builds you can have, it's slow and tedious going because you have no attacks that damage multiple enemies at the same time so you'll have to hack & slay everything one by one - which kinda sounds like what you wanted anyway.
I think i had a character build like that back when i played D2. I liked making various wacky builds. I had three different accounts with characters (damn Blizzard for putting a limit on how many characters you could have! :P).

The giveaway has ended and I have drawn the lucky winners. A very big thank you to everyone who took part in the discussion, the women and the men, but especially the women. For the most part it has been a very enjoyable giveaway with some very interesting topics. Hopefully it will help break the stereotype of the casual gamer girl, it seems many of the female gamers here have been gaming since the good old days of the Commodore 64 or the ZX Spectrum. I also want to thank the guys who asked extra game related questions, this opened up some very interesting discussions on the habits and likes of female gamers.

I have made a quick list of the different genres the ladies seem to prefer and listed them below. It may not be of much interest to everyone, but I found it quite interesting to know what kind of games people prefer, especially female gamers. The list is in no particular order, but the more popular genres are near the top of the list. It is by no means a definitive list, but it is interesting to see such a big selection of games, not just the usual "girly" games. RPGs seem to be the most popular choice, followed closely by point-and-click and adventure games, but there is also a nice mix of strategy games, platforms, FPS, and other genres.

P.S.@ddickinson, as a side note: Truth be told, I had reserved in my post a spot in case I nominated someone else as well, but, as the discussion spread across many pages, I lost count of who had entered and who hadn't, and that's why I finally didn't modify my original post - which means also : Big Kudos ddickinson for (probably) not losing count of the entries despite this organisational difficulty!
P.S.2 Btw, I guess I shouldn't be feeling guilty of being partially responsible for turning the thread into a more-than-30-pages "mess" (especially in the first few pages, when all the "feminism" discussion took place), but I do- I mean, I mostly entered in order to bump the thread, as it hadn't been noticed for 1-2 hours, and then a few posts later, the whole controversy started. :-/ Oh well...

You have no reason to feel guilty, none at all. You had no part in the unfortunate start to the giveaway, so please do not feel guilty for something that you did not cause. Thank you for taking the time to be the first to post and for contributing to the topic. It was a pleasure reading the different tastes and opinions of the other gamer girls here on GOG.

Congratulations to the other winners! Despite the drama that sometimes occurred, I enjoyed reading most of this thread. It's good to get to know some of the other women on the forum, and I too was rather interested to hear what we all like to play.

I'm the one to say thanks :-) I know there are quite a few men here who prefer playing female characters - I was quite surprised to find out. I honestly didn't give it much thought until you asked me straight to the head. Good thing, since explaining one's motives to others triggers a thought process that can lead to quite some insight regarding oneself. Especially when the first intuitive answer is along the lines of "I don't really know".

The "Why are you doing this?" should be asked more often (in the curious tone, not sounding like mom ;-)). It's a lot harder to do on your own. While I tend to be a self-reflecting type most of the time, there are a lot of things I do that I don't give much thought although it may be worthwhile to question them. And a conversation with all its input is a lot more stimulating than to stew in one's own juice - not being able to overcome the invisible walls of your mindset.

Ok then, I won't feel guilty anymore :-)

It's great that you managed to keep count of the entrants and it was also great during this GA to see the sharing of opinions between everybody (and not just girls/women-I put the slash because of the varied ages of the participants in the discussion) regarding gaming and related cultural stuff.
Anyways, because I forgot to write this before, good luck hosting the boys/men giveaway as well !
