Somebody has to make sure but...
We've all seen Steins Gate right?
If you haven't, it's one of the best things I've watched. Apart from...
Ahem.
I'll leave that there.

I did, i did saw a Stein's Gate. Oh, wait different Twitty:)

Chaos Head/Stein's Gate are great anime series indeed. Still have to watch the movie and Robotic Notes. Plus, i hear there are some webisodes on youtube.

As for Mushishi, that's one special released in the first quarter of the year - Mushishi Special Episode: The Shadow That Devours the Sun + a tv series (Mushishi: Next Passage)

You can get more info from anidb.net

Tekkaman-James: @Piranjade: Interesting. Did you avoid those "mostly male circles" because you were shy? Or were you afraid that they would, as they ended up doing, treat you like a "unicorn"? As for the internet...yeah, it has definitely become the place where prejudice has found a new home. Hopefully, that too will pass out of fashion some day.
I was kind of shy until I was 18 but I didn't avoid these circles.
It was just that I had my (female) friends and could live out my hobbies with them to a degree. Nights of playing Super Bomberman on the Super Nintendo or having a Diablo 1 LAN party, or just sitting on the floor playing MtG. Or just playing computer games on my own. I kind of didn't need those "mostly male circles". Also the "mostly male circles" often seemed to be much more serious or even professional about my/their hobbies than I was and I found that stressful.

Piranjade: playing MtG
What is that?

awalterj: What is it about strategy games that the majority of girls don't like? (except for Fire Emblem, Civilization and a handful others that do appear to have female fans in large numbers)
Some girls are big time strategy aficionados but they seem to be a very small minority, I'd personally estimate it at less than 10% of all female gamers. The strategy genre in general is one of the less popular ones among all gamers but girls seem to enjoy them in much lesser numbers than guys and I have no idea why.
I like to play strategy game but mostly only with friends. Because that's when I have a relaxed atmosphere and can enjoy playing with other people.
I mostly prefer TBS over RTS but I also enjoyed Command & Conquer (still have the boxed version - yay, nostalgia), Dune and Startopia.

I'm so young. >_> I never played Dune. I remember playing Starcraft when I was 4 and Warcraft 3 when I was 8, if that counts. :P

Piranjade: Magic: The Gathering.
I always wanted to play that, but we never got it. I was big on Yu-Gi-Oh and Duel Masters though.

Please, Major Alex Louis Armstrong is way more manly. His manliness has been passed down through several generations of the Armstrong line!

Crewdroog: hahaha, actually, the assassin is my favorite class in Diablo 2 :)
avatar
ddickinson: I usually played as the barbarian or the paladin. I can't resist getting up close and personal, bashing the heads in of all the evil minions of the dark lords :-). I have played through with most characters, but I prefer good old hand to hand combat over magic and archery in my RPG games.
avatar
Crewdroog: I don't normally use magic in RPGs either. I prefer stealth play. I love climbing up some insane cliff or stalking my prey and then one-shotting them with my bow.
I'm the opposite i'm all about magic and archery in rpgs.Stealth is a close second.

Also, necro/assassin/sorceress were my favourite classes in Diablo 2. ^^

I never got into Duel Masters, there just aren't any players here but I played quite a bit of Yu-Gi-Oh! and have a judge qualification for that game which surely has expired at some point in the last years.

I played A LOT of Vs. System up to the point of traveling to other countries to play in big tournaments but sadly UDE let the game die. They made so many stupid decisions about that game and its tournament formats. *headshake*
Apparently there is supposed to be a relaunch but I haven't seen or heard anything about that.

Duel Masters were probably the biggest back home. We had Yu-Gi-Oh, but Cartoon Network begun airing a dubbed version of Duel Masters and everyone got onto it. I used to be quite passionate about the game and have intricate strategies and combos of cards in my decks.

The VS system game looks interesting. Maybe I'll give it a shot if it becomes more popular. Around where I live now nobody plays card games. Kind of disappointing. I enjoy the ingenuity that goes into them.

wolfsrain: Wow! Someone that heard of Monster. And actually liked it. Also, very picky when it comes to anime, but i do watch popcorn stuff to relax:)

As for Mushishi, that was a new series this year that i have yet to watch. The sad thing is that quality in anime went down in the last 10 years and the adult themed ones became very rare. Looking forward to the second season of Psycho Pass.

Would also recommend Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 and Eden of the East from the newer anime series.
I can watch a lot of stuff, but what I like tends to be darker and more complex/allegorical. Shows that are just on the right side of being a little bit weird like Paranoia Agent or Revolutionary Girl Utena.

I have one general rule when deciding what deserves a closer look -- are the main characters over 18 and actually look like it? There are exceptions, of course, but it has served me pretty well. Those are generally the shows that tend to have the more interesting plots and complex characters.

Same here. I prefer more mature plots and characters that actually look their age and act accordingly.

Loved Utena and Paranoia Agent. Human Crossing was another excellent show. And for a great mood, Bartender.

Haven't even heard of Human Crossing before, but it looks interesting. Definitely going to check it out.
high rated
This is jus typical, I go to sleep and when I wake up I find that I missed the pillow fight, the lesbians, the porn and the popcorn :-).

I am glad that the thread has taken a much more pleasant and jovial path now. Hopefully all this drama about sexism can stop and we can just enjoy the topic. I will try to respond to some of the key parts that I missed.

awalterj: ....so as of this moment we have 4 female members polled and the ratio is 1: 3 - One member generally in favour of the genre (ddickinson) and 3 generally critical about it (MadyNora, Sage103082 and Crewdroog)
It's possible that I enjoy strategy a little more than most girls because I grew up with three brothers, all of which loved strategy games (and table top games, like Warhammer). I suppose that had I not had access to these games and had I not enjoyed playing them with my brothers, then maybe I would not be such a fan of strategy games. But who knows, it's just as likely that I would enjoy them no matter what.

sunshinecorp: I'll sell it!
avatar
Sage103082: Ill ship it!
I'll make illegal copies and sell it from the back of my car! I wonder if GOG would accept such and indie movie. We could call it GOG Girl's Gone Bad ~ filmed and sold by two creepy guys ;-). Maybe they could provide us with some "alluring" (posh word for slutty) DRM free themed pyjamas. It could be a promo video for GOG :-). Calm down guys, I'm only joking, don't get your hopes up. You will have to get your soft-core porn elsewhere.

avatar
Crewdroog: barefoot part. feet are gross.
I bet there is some foot fetishist somewhere who is very angry at you right now for saying that ;-)

avatar
Crewdroog: I KNEW IT!!! You men are all alike, using us women for you ill gotten gain!!!!!! *whacks ragnar with pillow*
avatar
Sage103082: throws pillow at him too!
Awww, I missed the pillow fight. And I think someone earlier mentioned angry tits as well. Am I at least in time for the talk about which boys we like and the practice kissing?

Also, while Ragnar is passed out (from Crewdroog and Sage's mighty pillow blows), lets shave of his beard! :-)

avatar
sunshinecorp: It's just that porn bores me to death. There. I said it.
How can you not like porn? Have you not seen the incredible actors and absolutely belivalble storylines of the US porn, or the high class British porn, or the unbelievably bizarre Japanese porn, or even the German porn... erm, enough said about German porn :-).

Disclaimer: Okay, so I have not really seen much porn, I have nothing against it (as long as it's consenting adults), just never had the urge to go looking for it, though on the internet that's a hard thing to do, everything you search for now brings up porn, but I think these stereotypes above are accurate.

AdamR: I'm obviously not entering, as you can probably tell by my screen name, but I was invited to discuss if I wish - and I wish it.
Thank you for the lovely comment. As for entering, well I bet there is a girl somewhere called Adam :-). There is a men's giveaway coming after this one, so feel free to enter for that.

But just be aware that there won't be any lesbian popcorn pillow fights in that one ;-).

awalterj: Since this thread is now about anime: the most wonderful anime series of all times are Nils Holgersson and Heidi, anyone who says otherwise is cruel and evil and I suggest you repent immediately!
They are not the most wonderful series! <insert evil and cruel laugh>
Only joking, I have never seen them, so I have no way of knowing either way. I just wanted to be cruel and evil and have a good Disney vileness laugh. Just like Ursula's laugh from The Little Mermaid - I think Pat Carroll had one of the best evil vileness voices in a Disney film.

And, last but not least, a serious response.

HijacK: But, but....but I want to! As far as homosexuality goes, I think women are a lot more tolerant to it, which is nice. I never understood what many males had against it. However, I've seen some pretty sad sights in this regard, but if you want to know what I mean, I'll take it to the PM. Let's keep it at lesbians. :P
I'm not sure it's just because women are more tolerant towards it, but that man are often made to feel bad for being gay or bisexual. Many gay men have trouble coming out, because they feel ashamed or guilty, or because they will be judged. Where as a lot of women don't, they usually don't come out because of the negative attention it brings from men or the ridiculous stereotypes attached to being a lesbian. If societies attitude towards gay men would ease off, then more men would be comfortable being gay, or bisexual. It has come on a long way in the last few decades, and I'm sure with a little more time, society will become more tolerant with gay people, as more people come to understand that there is nothing wrong with it.
