StingingVelvet: The thieves guild and dark brotherhood questlines are so much better than the others it's kind of ridiculous.
Really? I've started both, but:

Dark Brotherhood: The writing and voice acting for characters in the sanctuary is awful. Dialogue that an immature kid in grade school might write thinking it cool, voiced by actors that lack either skill or interest in the material (or perhaps who simply can't do much with the crap material). The armor isn't as cool as the DB armor in Morrowind or Oblivion. Astrid isn't as cool as Lachance. However, I haven't received the first major contract yet, just the three minor contracts. I intend to give the questline a chance, but I'm not impressed so far. Does it get better as it progresses?

*** minor, minimal spoilers about the first three TG quests below ***

Thieves Guild: This guild doesn't seem to be a guild for thieves but instead a mafia or mob organization. The first three quests involve framing someone, collecting "protection" money, and terrorizing a business into cooperation with a powerful noble (made powerful by using the guild to enforce a monopoly). Get better? Does the guild actually ask you to steal anything as the questline progresses? Extorting citizens and manipulating the economy is thievery, sure, but not the kind that interests me.

Maybe at the end of TG line in the next TES we'll get to run a bank?
Ok..... I love Skryim except a few things.... (in addition the the buggy mess it is on ps3)

But I'm reinstalling Morrowind this weekend for PC (I really reallly hope the patch fixes the ps3 issues cause I dont wanna replay 20+ hours on PC just because it is more stable...) and giving it a go again :)

(either that or more civ 5 or some other random game,,,)
At least Skyrim seems more stable than Fallout 3 and New Vegas, might be the new engine (I don't remember Oblivion). Only had a couple crashes so far, and they shut down the application completely making it easy to relaunch and load the last autosave, compared to New Vegas which crashes once every couple of hours and puts the "this application has crashed" pop-up box behind the game window making it annoying to get to and actually quit.

Well, what I was mainly talking about was the production values and time put into those questlines, which is way above the others so far in my experience. The companions are just a bunch of fetch quests and the mage's guild thing is very short and lacks direction.

As for quest quality the thieves ramps up quickly, and their filler fetch quests are much better than most due to the excitement of stealing stuff. The DB is not as inventive so far as Oblivion's was, but still good. I don't know... none of it really bugs me like it seems to bug you.

Yes, it does.
And the voice acting for the DB is still better than that wizard in Whiterun, that guy was awful ;)

The TG quests also get more thief-ery and less thug-gy after those first few quests.
But the extortion and such IMO is excused because of the state the guild is in, which you found out later on. It kind of makes sense for them to.. have branched out as it were.

They both get better after the first few quests, but the actual story missions for them are over very quickly unfortunately. Still, the storylines are fun, if somewhat short.

ddmuse: Really? I've started both, but:
Dark Brotherhood writing / voice acting / dialogue - can't agree here and once more, I wonder what other games would reach "good standard" in comparison. The armor isn't an improvement in my book either. Though you really shouldn't judge Astrid or the questline after the first 3 minor quests.
Basically (and without spoilers) it would be hard if not impossible to top the DB questline from Oblivion. So they went with this one as far as you could possibly get. Did they succeed? I'd say no, but they did as good as possible.

Thieves guild - yes it starts that way which was a bit of a disappointment for me too. Though it does make sense once you've gotten through most of the questline. The part / story delivered with the cutscene was very well done.
I couldn't help but everything along the thieves guild quests screamed for a "return of the Bal Molagmer" finish for me, which didn't happen. If they don't DLC that in, I'd guess mods will.
about voice acting, I have only this to say:

Cicero

that irritating little whelp, I killed him with magic, used the console to ressurect him, killed him with fists, then raised his corpse with magic and killed the skeleton (ok skelly isnt true, wish id thought of it at the time)
