I updated OOO, and now Oblivion crashes on the loading screen. I think it's back to vanilla for me, I spent five hours this morning working on it and it still doesn't work. Eugh.

It's certainly much more frustrating to install mods than Fallout 3 as i'm on my 4th fresh install before modding it but finally it works.

That's so true. Nehrim is awesome. If the OP is looking for a new way to play Oblivion (totally new story and environments built from Bethesda's tools), definitely check out this unbelievably good fan-made adventure:

Since it's my fault the Deals thread is being over-run, I'll go ahead and bump this since there's talk.
I've been downloading mods all day/night. Haven't even bought the game yet, but figured I would get all the mods/tweaks/tools I need or want before I spend all night downloading the game.
Here are the mods I've grabbed:
Better Oblivion Sorting Software: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20516
Better Cities: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16513
FCOM (And associated mods): http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1091142-relz-fcom-convergence-and-ufcom-relz
Weapon Expansion Pack: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35560
Oblivion Script Extender: http://obse.silverlock.org/
All Natural Weather: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=18305
Unique Landscapes: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19370
Wyre Bash: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22368
Darnified UI: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10763
Unofficial Oblivion Patch: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1417
Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10739
I suspect it's going to take a few days to properly install all that.

Steams is currently selling Oblivion GOTY edition, the whole she-bang with all the DLCs, for about $6.
You should head over to the relevant Steam forums because everyone who has just bought the game are having discussions on mods and stuff:

Man this takes me back. I spent a whole week carefully downloading mods, reading mod forums, fiddling with Wyre Bash and the load order.
Turns out I had much more fun doing all that than finally playing the game itself. Sigh.

Don't tell me about this. I can honestly say I spent way more time modding Oblivion than actually playing it! Heh, my highest level character might have been 10 or something... So this time I think I'll play Vanilla Skyrim first ;)

Whole week? How about a whole year? Yea, I deleted the game precisely for that reason, I was constantly modding it, and NOT playing it... at all.

I've been spending almost twelve straight hours (breaks for studying and NOT GETTING ANGRY ENOUGH TO KILL PEOPLE) to try and get FCOM to work right with Oblivion. I've looked online, I've found guides, I've followed said guides, and I can't freaking get anywhere.
All the mods appear perfectly green with happy little merged patched symbols in Wyre Bash. They're 100% sorted correctly using BOSS. I even used OBMM to enable BSA Redirection and fun things. All the mods install correctly but every single time I load the game up, the second I leave the sewers (Or try to sleep using Alternative Start), the game crashes trying to load the outdoors.
The only time I actually saw the game was when I disabled Martigen's Monster Mod. And while I could see the world, I also had missing textures and floating disembodied castles.
I've used mods my entire PC life. I've modded dozens if not hundreds of games. *THIS SHOULD NOT BE THIS HARD* ARGH.
Edit: Right after posting this, the game let me load Anvil. Then upon trying again, it crashed.
Lost my mind and uninstalled Oblivion, deleted all the files, and will start again....Someday.

I've thought about it for the hour or two since I lost my mind. I think when I did the first install, I messed the process up. And like an idiot I didn't back up the Oblivion folder. So every time after that I tried to reinstall FCOM, I kept having left over files or packages causing issues. It was pretty much the same error every single time.
I'll probably set Oblivion to reinstall tonight, back it up, and give it another go. If I can't get it I'll just play vanilla Oblivion with fancy graphic updates and tell FU to FCOM.
