Runehamster: Huh...nice reasoning there. I've seen Gabriel Knight mentioned a buncha times now, but never heard of it. Got to go look that up.

Twilight: I believe this is the solution :) Really nice *thumbs up*

Thanks, but that wasn't originally my idea. I think I read it from a post made by someone in this thread or somewhere else in the intertubes. Same with the other clues, I just summarized. :)
Apple keynote started some time ago in San Fran. They shown that long awaited tablet, called iPad.
To hell with that anyway. Tomorrow is the most important day of this month (maybe year).
GOG announcement will change the face of the world :-)

cogadh: Same here. I didn't stick to any one guess, I just debated the merits of each clue's guesses with everyone. I think we were probably the most active posters in the thread, so maybe "the algorithm" was just a matter of who participated the most.

Nah, I didn't post that much compared to Delixe and CaptFitz and their sock eating fiasco (in Dr. Klaw voice: next time, Captfitz... next time).
And if it were down to merit, I'd say the guy who found out T.R.O.I.K.A. and the one who found Arcanum in Ohio should be on the draw (sorry for not remembering your names, but I'm not wading through this monster thread for them)
So that only leaves random luck. Pick a number from 1 to 2000 then find the post in the thread and tadaaa we have a winner.
And Gabriel (messenger) Knight (soldier) makes perfect sense! Good find there!
Conclusion:
Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts.
Granted, none of us really know what GOG has up their sleeve, but it seems pretty obvious to me from the clues given.

Navagon: On the front page GOG has begun counting down to next Thursday with the message "Expect the Unexcelled". Obviously this is one of GOG's major first quarter announcements. But what is it?
Official Hints:
1. The return of incredible karmic awareness.
2. Where history overlaps with the present time.
3. They are two different characters, but they complement each other beautifully.
4. A messenger is not named for a soldier, but precedes one.
5. Ohio's secret place.
Let the random speculation commence!

I would agree with most of the "reasoned" guesses in this thread. It sounds like there will be a major publisher coming onboard, bringing highly-coveted titles to GOG. At the moment, I can think of only two publishers that may fit the clues given: EA and Sierra/Activision.
Case for EA:
Title: Expect the Unexcelled (Ultima == ultimate, or maybe the biggest GOG publisher to date)
1. The return of incredible karmic awareness. (Ultima's "virtue-based" gameplay)
2. Where history overlaps with the present time. (Ultima's time-and-space travelling)
3. They are two different characters, but they complement each other beautifully. (Ultima 7)
4. A messenger is not named for a soldier, but precedes one. (Iolo precedes the Avatar)
5. Ohio's secret place. (dunno about this one))
Case for Sierra/Activision:
Title: Expect the Unexcelled (the best games of Sierra/Activision? The biggest deal yet?)
1. The return of incredible karmic awareness. (no idea, here)
2. Where history overlaps with the present time. (Day of the Tentacle? No, that's LA)
3. They are two different characters, but they complement each other beautifully. (some game or other)
4. A messenger is not named for a soldier, but precedes one. (Gabriel Knight)
5. Ohio's secret place. (Arcanum, Ohio --> Arcanum, the game)
Perhaps you guys can help fill in the blanks?

I predict they will announce a custom-made GoodOldGames Tablet to blow Apple's iPad out of the water :P.

Day of the Tentacle belongs to Lucas Arts.
"They are two different characters, but they complement each other beautifully. "
If GOG will in fact announce two publishers at once, this clue would fit right in. EA and Activision are different companies with different catalogs, but they complement each other beautifully from the GOG point of view, since each of them has Good Old Games we'd like to see available here.

Could be. But then it could just be Activision Blizzard.

As others keenly observed,
"The return of incredible karmic awareness" = TROIKA = developer of Arcanum (and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines and Temple of Elemental Evil). Sierra was the publisher for Arcanum and (apparently, though I haven't seen confirmation of this) still owns the publishing rights.

well since everybody is doing the same guesses I'll do some gut feeling guesses that are probably wrong. My guess goes out to an anouncement of several publisher/developers that all are connected somehow (through the hints). First i'll go with ID SOFTWARE. karmic could be Carmack and the return to castle wolfenstein. Some other hints seemed to me to relate to anachronox (sock eating ;)) a game by ion storm using a carmack engine and the boss was a former id software employee (romero). ION STORM would make sense because a lot of people seemed to think about deus ex (also the same engine i think) and thief 3 (steampunk I think). Ion storm would lead to EIDOS. Finally returning to the beginning of my little association session return to castle wolfenstein was published by ACTIVISION that is linked with Arcanum (the lead guess on this topic I think) and TROIKA (revealed by the first letter of each word hint) And since TROIKA means 3 or something my final guess is an announcement of ID SOFTWARE/ EIDOS / ACTIVISION (and their closest partners being blizzard and square enix)
I know it sounds far fetched but it's my gut feeling associative guess....

Nah they'll announce a GoG distribution of Linux :P GoGuntu!
AARGH ONE DAY LEFT MY HEAD WILL EXPLODE
My final word is that it is EA. I may be wrong, and if I am, fine, but I will not change my guess. I have moved my pawn and have lifted my hand from the board. Now it is GOG's turn to make their move, and I will see whether I have a checkmate or not.

Maybe it's just me, but when I go to the Community page now, under "Games you'd love to see on GOG" I have Arcanum and Gabriel Knight 3. Coincidence? I don't think so.
Mystery solved, I guess.
