From what I read about System Shock 2 I understood that, and I'm i made a mistake please correct me, the rights to the game itself belong to EA, since they bought Origin system, the original developer of System Shock 1 before they released it. But, EA doesnt own the distribution and publishing rights to the game. And System Shock 2 was developed by Irrational, from IP that was given to them by EA, but they did not own that IP. That's why System Shock 2 is very different, at least at the beggining, from System Shock 1.

eurotransient: Can you link me to where GOG said they'd be announcing one of the "top three" publishers joining in January? I'm looking through the news archive from December and I can't spot that little nugget of very important info.

I believe this is what you're looking for, from page 5 of the current topic. (Please peruse the earlier pages of a topic, the answer's often already there. Thank you! :) )
Gundato: Did they ever actually say that? I thought they just said "something big" or "a new publisher", and everyone assumed that meant EA or another publisher they want. You know, sort of like with every Thursday since the site became public :p
It was in an article. 100% sure.
Edit: here it is (text near the bottom).

Luned: Due to the broken quote system, please visit the original post in this thread to find the link.

Thanks for the head's up. I'm all for perusing earlier parts of the conversation, but let's be honest; this thread is getting pretty massive. You'll have to forgive me for missing one link :)
Anyone joining now, here's the article (in Polish) referring to a big three publisher joining.
As for the tweets regarding excitement from GOG about a new publisher announcement. The GOG tweet was made on November 17th, and on November 26th they announced an agreement with 1C Company. Why would anyone think that tweet is somehow pointing to this Thursday?
Why GOG team tolerate and even stimulate this fire? I mean, this announcement better be very big or there would a lot of disappointed people.
After the third hint on the twitter and considering GOG team's VERY BIG confidence to tolerate this hype, i'm pretty sure that they will announce partnership with EA.
What about the announcement is about different games / different developers / different publishers at once. Troika seems to be part of the lineup, especially because GOG already announced that they were in talks with the various IP holders and mentioned that they really really really want Troika's back catalog on GOG a while ago.
But the current announcement on the frontpage really looks like a hint towards Microsoft Game Studios, which also have some nice (and currently hard to get) games in their back catalog such as Dungeon Siege, Freelancer, MechWarrior, MechAssault, Rise of Nations and Impossible Creatures.

This is my favorite guess yet!

eurotransient: System Shock 2 would be pretty darn sweet, too, but it seems to me that would be a little more complicated to get a hold of, and thus, kind of unlikely at this time. But I'd love to be wrong about that!

Actually System Shock 2 would be easier to get than Planescape: Torment as it was based on Planescape which is? Oh yes AD&D which Wizards of the Coast are currently suing Atari over.
You guys are going to kill us when we announce that this whole thing was all about our sponsorship of a Farmville item. :D Oh, and GOG-branded socks.

Furthermore, I don't see WotC handing the license back to Interplay if Atari lose it either.

capfitz will be so happy to hear that.
Don't worry, I've come up with a foolproof plan to get the information out of GOG early! I've sent them a message, informing them that I only have a short amount of time to live. In fact, so short an amount that I'll be gone by the time the announcement is made!
They couldn't possibly deny a dying man's wish, right? RIGHT?
Don't worry, fellow gaming dudes and dudettes, I'll share the info once I've got it!
;)
