kavazovangel: Play both.

Start with Overture, then Black Plague, and then Requiem. When you're done with Penumbra, play Amnesia.

Yes, but skipping reqiuem isn't a bad idea. Requiem is just a puzzle game with almost no story, and the ending was obvious from first seconds of the game.
What about that Russian game where you play as one of three characters in a town that has been taken by the plague? I've heard good things about it and it seemed quite eerie. Can't remember the name though.

Pathologic?

That's the one!
Could be worth a try for OP!

From what I understand it has some absurdly clunky combat, but I haven't gotten a chance to play it, so I'm going off of what I've read about it.

Nevertheless, there is no reason not to finish it. :)

Yeah, I enjoyed the puzzles, but you can't say it's "scary" game at all ;)
I was gonna say Cryostasis but I noticed you wanted non-shooter.
Your loss.

I played the second in that early 'Cthulhu' series - Prisoner of Ice, I really liked it but it was more of a solidly good game than anything particularly scary

I've played lots and lots and lots of scary shooters. I'm not against them at all. I just haven't played a non-shooter scary game and didn't want to try one that sucked and then just give up on the genre.

It sounds like Amnesia is good and Penumbra: Black Plague if I'm hearing right.

If I like those, I might give Scratches a try. But that one looks a lot different than the others.

Yes, Prisoner of ice has a lot less ambient, tension, references than shadow of the comet

Shadow of the comet takes place in Illsmouth and as may know you have to investigate strange events that happened.

Here some shots from mobygames

Now I recall that Sanitarium has some creepy moemnts

If you want a REALLY good scary game, go pick up a Gamecube for $20 and get a copy of Eternal Darkness I promise that it's a worthwhile investment.
