being a shitty blog is one thing, but publishing this garbage?
yeah, if you are a huge JRPG fan, you're just another trope.
Ok.
Way to insult gamers just because they like a genre you don't =/.
However, I do agree that that "article" is a waste of bandwidth. But then, Kotaku in its entirety is a waste of a domain. They bitch when "commentators" don't have decent English (unless it's some stupid meme or "leet speak", yet I haven't read a single article posted on there yet which didn't contain glaringly obvious mistakes. Is that the quality of journalism these days?
I think I'll stick to my Giant Bomb now. The podcast covers everything from the previous week that's remotely interesting.
the problem with most JRPGS, it's gotten to the point that the whole genre is a trope.
but to have published nothing but debasing attacks on the letter is ridiculous. I would have appreciated more thought out posts being published. if this is all those JRPG hardcores can come up with, then they themselves are just tropes.

Just saw something pop up even worse than this article; they haven't posted their Game of the Year article yet, and their response is "Why rush it?" I don't know, maybe because you've had the whole year to think about this, and no one will give a shit when you finally do hand out your Game of the Year awards?

Because, just calling people "tropes" is a well-thought out argument and not a debasing attack :p
Seriously though. I am not a huge fan of kotaku, but that is just because I am not the target demographic. I am not huge on the Japanese approach to gaming (although, we seem to overlap when it comes to the Wizardry series (and giant robot fetishes)), and that is what they are big on. It is the same reason why I love RockPaperShotgun, but most consolers would not enjoy stuff like the narrative play-through of Liberal Crime Squad.
Clearly you like some things kotaku does, but you really don't like jrpgs. We get it, so why are you getting so worked up about it? :p
And as for the Game of the Year awards:
I agree. Take your time. There are some late entrants. Is Dragon Age a better game than whatever came out earlier in the year?
One complaint I have with a lot of awards is that it is clear that late entrants get special treatment. Either they are ignored, or they get passed without much thought.

The kicker is the IGN article is more or less on quite a few points but uses Oblivion, Mass Effect and Fallout 3 for examples sort of defeats the argument like how anyone who would insult JRPGs only uses Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Expected to see comparisons to some WRPGs like Baldur's Gate.
The Kotaku article isn't any better, just baseless attacks with no ground while IGN at least tried to use examples.
Isn't mainstream journalism great?

Now you're certainly making a mistake if you really believe that possible quotes from a bulletin board is the opinion of the majority of Japanese gamers. Also bear in mind that the original posts would have been made in Japanese and are open game to a translator misinterpreting the comments (especially if they have their own bias they want to portray to the reader).
But then, why the attack on JRPGs in the first place? You can take any genre and come up with similar issues to moan about too. And people constantly do that, yet no one bats an eyelid... So relax, it's nothing to get worked up about. If you don't like JRPGs, that's okay. Many people don't.

bansama: But then, why the attack on JRPGs in the first place?

Absolutely. Attacks in disguise, that's what they were.
But anyway, I pretty much agree on most comments (whether it's on rpg or jrpg) and I love them both anyway.
The main problem I have with JRPGs is the fact that the vast majority of them aren't on PC, which is only method of gaming I have routine access to.

I obviously don't think that all the fans are like that, or else I wouldn't be mad at kotaku for posting that, like I said, if they had published the thoughtful responses, I'd be pretty chill with it.
Here's some more fuel for the fire:

IGN and the like only ever talk about very recent games unless they are covering a re-release (which makes a game "relevant" again) or doing a retrospective. A few years from now they will be using Mass Effect 5 and The Elder Scrolls 7 as examples and completely forget about the likes of Oblivion and Fallout 3 (just as they have mostly forgotten about games like Morrowind and Knights of the Old Republic).
As for Kotaku, it's just a blog. They may try to convince you that they are something more, using terms like "games journalism" and winning exclusive interviews, but they are still nothing more than a blog aimed at the lowest common denominator. As with IGN, their audience has a very poor long-term memory so you will only hear about "relevant" titles.
It was effectively an opinion piece and so really not worth reading. Kotaku has some great stuff but it also has some utter shit to wade through. Also they might just as well have posted a top 10 reasons the PS3 isn't as good as the xbox 360 and then posted quotes from a ps3fanboy.com, cheap lazy filler material for a slow news day
