My guess is they're still confused as to how to distribute the game. Plus there's the part where they said they want to use cloud saving - I'd be more than happy to print screen the PMs if anyone wants to call me a liar.. Since nothing's set in stone yet, I think they're still looking for solutions. i'm also quite confused now. Hopefully they'll find a resolution eventually and inform people about it before the KS ends.

I was wondering if maybe there was more than just CJ & AC answering the messages, that would explain the sometime contradictory statements.
Yeah, I've PM'd them again asking for clarification that this means no online activation.

After all, there was a grand total of 45 minutes between them telling me there'd be online activation and posting the FAQ answer that said you can 'play' it DRM-free.

And people got the responses confirming online activation and cloud saves AFTER the FAQ answer was posted.

I won't believe the game to be DRM-free until they actually say there won't be any online activation.
We plan on having the new Tex Murphy game "Project Fedora" be completely DRM - Free. Online activation will not be required for the game.
Seems like they've changed their minds. Or perhaps they misspoke before. Either way, they're not contradicting themselves so there's nothing wrong.

If they'd decided to go with online activation I would have accepted it were it not for the contradictions ('it'll be DRM-free but require online activation').
It's possible that they reconsidered their position after seeing the uproar in the comments today. My guess is that they weren't even aware of how controversial DRM can be. Even the creators of Xenonauts have said that they were surprised that getting a DRM-free version of their game was such a big deal to people.

I think it becomes more of a big deal when you're asking people to fund your game in advance. Trusting their customers is the least they can do when the customers are placing so much trust in them. ;)

Yeah, there's an important difference between crowdfunded and "ordinary" games. I do occasionally buy games with DRM when it's "unavoidable", but I do not want help fund the development of such games with my money.

It's amazing what people pulling pledges can do to change whether there is DRM in a game or not...
Hooray for crowds. I had no problem with the game being Steam only, but it's nice that they came around for those of you that care about that.
Dear lord you guys can complain <.<. Just do like everyone else and get a crack if activation servers ever go down. Don't forget even games like Lemmings all the way back in the early 90s had DRM (you had to use the supplied disk to play it, couldn't copy it and if it broke, you lost the game).
I know its already been said, but that Kickstarter video is fantastic.

It's good to see Chris Jones really getting into the Tex Murphy role again.

I have a feeling we are watching history. We'll look back with longing on these kickstarter videos in many years to come.
This is the coolest Kickstarter game project ever! And yes, the pitch video is awesome! I love all of the previous Tex games, and am so glad that Tex is coming back! I can’t thank CJ & AC enough, and words can’t express how excited and grateful I am. :-) In the last 14 years, I’ve wanted nothing more than to see the return of Tex, and now dreams are coming true!

It is really awesome that Chris Jones is Tex once again. He hasn’t lost touch with playing Tex’s character perfectly over the years one bit. It’s the same Tex we know and love. I also noticed that all of the locations on Chandler Avenue are in the pitch video too… Ritz Hotel, Newstand, Rook’s Pawn Shop, Slice O’ Heaven, Electronics Shop, Golden Gate Hotel, Brew ‘n’ Stew, Rusty’s Funhouse, etc… they are all back! It’s going to be remarkable to explore those locations once again in full 2012 3D technology.

*** SPOLERS *** *** SPOLERS *** *** SPOLERS ***
What are some of everyone’s favorite scenes in the games? I love the fake dog poop scene in Pandora, and the scene where Tex gets literally “dropped off” while in the speeder being driven by the NSA guys. I also love the room in Under a Killing Moon where Tex is looking at the portraits of people in the GRS conference room, and making fun of them. Melan Tode (the Colonel’s girlfriend) is also a great character in UAKM, as well as Clint the Bum, and of course Tex and Chelsee. The cutscenes in Overseer are all very professional, and I especially like the blow up sex doll scene, and the interactive clocktower fight with Big Jim Slade. And Mac Malden is great from all of the games that he’s in, including Martian Memorandum. I could go on and on about more of my favorite parts from all of the games… what are some of your favorite parts?
*** END SPOLERS ***

And if you’ve never played the games, GOG is the gateway to Tex: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/tex_murphy_under_a_killing_moon

Whoa whoa put up a spoiler tag, partner! I've played UAKM and Overseer, but not everyone has ;)

This, plus the fact that there's a good chance the game won't even require Steam now, is why I'll be putting back up my $115 pledge. I'm willing to take the plunge and trust Chris, because I really want to see this new game. I grew up on Tex freaking Murphy. I even introduced UAKM to my neighbour.

So, since Chris and Aaron have come forth to say there will be:
- no DRM
- no online activation

I'm going to put my chips on the table and wager that it means I'll be able to install it wherever, whenever.

That would essentially be an Appeal to Tradition (but more in the lines of "it's okay" than "it's right").

Following your logic, no-one should have, or be, complaining about women being second class citizens because don't forget, that's how it was (and still is in some places) way back in the past. Same with slavery. Or ruling systems. Or basically any other advance of human society that came from people complaining.

With regards to Tex, I've prodded the "Remind Me" button and will check out the latest situation with the DRM when that comes around before I make a pledge. Meanwhile, I'll be fully backing Haunts: The Manse Macabre because not only DRM-free, but also for Linux :D Yay!
