lowyhong: I'll put in $15 if it doesn't meet it's funding goal, but c'mon. It obviously will.
Okay, but seriously, you went from wanting to "throw your entire fortune at this game" and saving up to get the $500 tier to maybe backing it with a token $15 dollars if it is failing... I just don't get it. At all. I thought the important thing here was the _game_.

Cloud saves in an adventure game? What the fsck? This Kickstarter is beginning to annoy me. I've never backed out of a project before, but I'm seriously considering it now.

If they are using Steam they should definitely update the DRM-free answer in their FAQ, if they uses Steam then it's false advertising...

Yeah, I don't get this whole "cloud" stuff, for lack of a better, more expletive word, being shoved into a single-player adventure game. What's next, Facebook social buttons?
@Zeewolf There's nothing to it. I just don't want it to be on Steam, if possible.

The value of a game and any accompanying goodies have far less value to me if the physical media that carries the game is rendered unnecessary. The game itself will most likely carry $15 worth of entertainment, maybe slightly more, but my decision to go any higher than $15 hinges on whether it's something that I can install unconditionally, and therefore has keepsake value.

As an example, even though I can buy the X-COM series from Gamersgate at a pittance (and I did), I still have no qualms about buying a copy of UFO Defense from eBay (I own two boxed copies, both the US-version of UFO Defense). Yeah, crazy I know, but there's no accounting for tastes. That's why some people want all their games to be on Steam, while others want to copy their games to a thumb drive or any other physical media.

I went from $50.00 to 0. There is nothing "to get". Since I'm talking about MY money, and not YOUR money, I get to make that decision. If you choose to back it, that is great for you. Why do you think you get to decide what criteria I look for in a game? I don't have any problem in the world with people that choose to support DRM. Why do DRM supporters feel the need to tell me I'm wrong? Regardless, I don't play games with DRM. It means there are many games I'll never play.

If Tex Murphy decides to go the DRM route, that is Tex Murphy deciding I won't be buying their game. If they want to drop the DRM, that is them deciding I'll buy the game. However, with all the flip-flopping and misleading answers, even if they came out now and said, no DRM, I'm still gonna wait till launch and see what they actually release before giving any money. Does this part make sense? If a company does something I don't like, I don't pay them for it. Tex Murhpy's next game devs just did something I don't like.

I'm backing two other games at $50.00 levels because they advertise "DRM-FREE" from the very start.

lowyhong: Latest update: looks like it may not even come to GOG.

"Thanks for your continued feedback. We will speak to GOG about releasing our game entirely DRM free in the future, however we plan on supporting cloud saves, and without any login credentials at all that feature would be lost. We haven't heard of GamersGate, however we will look into that as a possible distributor. "

o_O
Cloud saves? What for? What purpose could that possibly serve, have they completely lost their minds?
Punishing people funding (sic!) your game is not the smartest thing to do...

I'm very disheartened by the DRM info that's spreading.

Lol I saw your post on the KS comments thread.

I don't. When did I say that?

I just thought that, you know, the GAME was the main thing here. The game they've been wanting to make for 15 years and the game so many of us have been dying to play for 15 years. The old Tex Murphy games were so unique, not just because of the stories and characters, not just because of the FMV, but because they offered a true hybrid of point and click and proper, first person-based gameplay. Nobody's really done it since.

So I thought people would want Tex Murphy back, not say "we only want you back if you're DRM-free". Obviously I was wrong, and that is very disappointing to me, but at no point did I ever tell you what to do with your money. I'm just feeling a bit sad and frustrated right now, and I'm trying to express why. Hope that's okay.
Wow things are getting a little heated here. Let's all calm down for a second.

Zeewolf: I can't believe that something as trivial as a moderate DRM system means people will go from backing hundreds of dollars and thinking this is the best thing ever to not backing at all. That is so disappointing.

This is our chance to get a new Tex Murphy game. I mean, this is it. The last chance we'll ever have. It's now or never.
If they want us to trust them with our money, they need to be prepared to trust us with their game. It's as simple as that. Besides, it's obviously going to get funded.

I hope so. But looking at the SpaceVenture-kickstarter, which also had a flying start, I don't think it's neccessarily that obvious.

Besides, it's a very small budget to begin with. I think they need to clear it by a pretty good margin if we're going to get the game Tex really deserves.

Edit: Anyway, going offline. And I think I'll stay offline from GOG until they've passed the goal or the Kickstarter is over. I don't think any other Kickstarters have felt this important to me personally, and I don't want to generate more negativity by trying to defend it here. As long as the subject is DRM, it's a battle I can't "win" here anyway.

I'd be a bit more cautious with "obviously going to get funded". There was a great first day because the die-hard Tex fans have been saving up since the announcement, waiting with anticipation to pounce.
Same thing happened with the Two Guys, but now they've hit a wall pretty much (hope they'll get it going with future updates).
We shouldn't be taking things for granted here, and radical decisions like the DRM one are really risky...
One final response. I thanked them for their answer and mentioned that it sounded they are going the DRM route and suggested GOG... well, here, I'll just copy paste ;)

My note:

"Thank you very much for your response. From this and other responses it sounds like you have decided on DRM. I wish you the best of luck on your game and hope you consider using a DRM-free distribution service, like GOG, at some point in the future. I've purchased all the Tex Murphy games from there and hope to buy this one some day to. Perhaps once launch sales start to fizzle a little, you will open up to other options?

Thanks again for your time."

Response:

"Thanks for your feedback. We will talk to GOG about releasing our game in the future, however it currently isn't in the list for "day one" launch sites. We're glad you've enjoyed our other games.

Thanks!"

This works for me. It will be a "good ole game" when I buy it ;)
