Figured I'd post this, but it looks like several sites are reporting TF2 is going Free 2 Play:

http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/06/24/breaking-team-fortress-2-is-now-free-to-play-forever/

This makes the second game this week to announce Free2Play (previously announced was City of Heroes.)

COH announced they are going F2P. It is to be rolled out later this year. Sorry if my wording lead you to think it is already F2P.

Well if you're in need of a superhero MMO that's free Champions Online is F2P.
Great, the game will become even more crappy.
Do us people who purchased the game beforehand get anything from this switch?

I haven't heard, one way or the other.

Automatically premium accounts, which have benefits over free accounts.

Any info on the "Premium Accounts"?

Because all F2P games are crappy, AMIRIGHT (ignoring the fact that League of Legends and Spiral Knights are deep, engrossing experiences that rival proper $50-60 games)?

Seriously, though, this is good news. More players, more fun!

Yes. Basically, they're exactly what you already have. It's the free accounts that are different. Can't give items, only 50 item slots, only have access to most items.

Oh, and people who bought the game get a free hat.

I imagine it is more like the community will continue to degenerate a bit. With being free, I personally have no doubt hackers and exploiters will increase. I know when I played a good while back, free weekends always meant running into a handful of those wanting to abuse the system. Now that the game is permanently free, there is no loss in trying to ruin and grief the game for others. Banned? Just make another account in two minutes and off you go.

Not fussed here though since I do not play anymore, but I can only imagine the implications this will have community wise. A smart move by Valve though in the business sense.
wth what happens to those who paid for this hat fest :X
