deathkitten: I try to avoid any of that stuff.. cos it's crap for american wannabe-japanese ... so I dont really get the reference .. explain??

Aerith is a character in Final Fantasy Seven.
It's not a bad game, but not entirely remarkable either.
That Aerith would be his favorite female character either says something about
1. his exposure to video games
or
2. female video game characters in general.
I figure it's either number one, or this dude has so much of a hard on for Final Fantasy Seven (read; Fanboy) that he can't see any other video game at all.
Now, how did discussion about SS2 became ... ... Hey, what EXACTLY are you talking about?
About System Shock: Original all the way! It kinda loses ... something ... Or other ... With new models/textures
MODs: Not just capacity, I'd say this sais it all :D
About Alyx: Heh, I see noone still made better models than Valve did :D

deathkitten: i think you're the kind of man it's impossible to explain to :p

She seems down to earth to me... I mean, physically - no I-could-kill-an-elefant-between boobs policy, almost-naked policy, as well as latex-rulezz-policy - in comparison with most other gaming female characters, Alyx looks normal :D
I'll just wait if Japanese discussion turns out somehow :D
Edit: I wrote HL2 instead of SS2... My head is somplace else

System shock 2.. I never played it but I really want to.
truly a fantastic experience... but I did hear on the grapevine, as with several titles of the time, that it won't work on multi-core processor systems. This may be a slight stumbling block, or a big headache, I'm not sure what the deal is exactly.
It totally ruined Bioshock for me, since everyone started saying "its the successor to SS2" everywhere, then I played Bioshock and consider it mostly a backward step (except graphically, although I could only run it on lower settings).

They TRIED to make it a 'spiritual' successor. They almost succeeded in atmosphere (and the plot wasn't that far off from the same in some ways) but completely effed up the RPG aspects of SS2 and dumbed it down. Plus no inventory. Also the vita chambers just screwed it all up.

Agreed, but without the comparison fueled by the hype machine, I would have had a more favourable experience.
I think there are many games that suffer endlessly from excessive hype, and a touch of honesty would help. Although in the Bioshock case, I'm fairly sure I heard one of the developers say that they couldn't make a game as good as SS2, which shows a remarkable lack of confidence in your own product.

I did like the game (except the vita chambers... where's the suspense if you're immortal?), but I don't know if it was a smart move on their part to try to hype it to SS2. It was fun, it was atmospheric and some of the abilities were pretty fun.
I think of Bioshock as a console title more than a computer title.. because every thing is dumbed down, and the vita chambers themselves.. it all feels like they really wanted to make a console game and just ported it to PC as an after thought.

Weclock: one of the dudes on there said his favorite female character for depth was Aerith.. assuming that is of course from FFVII..
I threw up a little bit just then.

Yeah, that's when I closed the thread. The unending popularity of that sorry dishrag is a mystery to me.
FF7 spoiler, just in case somebody needs the warning ---------------------- When she was killed, my thought process, and I don't exaggerate in the least, went something like this:
1) "Crap, she has my Edincoat."
2) "Do I at least get my materia back?"
3) "This is a long cutscene."
I pretty much never thought about her again after disc 1 was over. A subpar character for a mediocre game.
End spoiler
Despite the fact I actually like FF7, I can't understand why people would get attached to Aerith, she always seemed so bland and uninteresting to me, although she does show some personality in Crisis Core, there are many other characters that make more of a lasting impression. The characters in general in FF7 (and possibly most FF games) are usually hard to relate to - especially the main ones.
I never had her in my party anyway, so I never stressed about missing items, as she never had anything I would miss.
I still wonder if any other games have interactions on a level of Baldur's Gate 2 or Jagged Alliance 2, whose characters have actual personalities strong enough to make you chose them on that basis rather than on stats alone.

Afthartos: If EA is going to make a new System Shock game, then let us all hope they aren't going to make it "simple" for consoles.

There are rumors that EA actually started to make System Shock 3... but then decided during development to change the name and tweak the game, so that it wouldn't be associated with BioShock. A quick google search will yield a bunch of speculation. I'd love to read definitive word by an EA Redwood Shores representative regarding this.

Pantalaimon: I like games to be consistent, and the only way to keep it like that, is to remake everything, which of course no modding team has the the capacity to do.
Yeah, it's impossible :P
