toxicTom: I don't know if SS1 will have a big market. There is System Shock Portable and although I'm not sure about the legal issues, it's been out in the open for years and it seems no rights holder (EA?) has stopped it. I think most people consider it freeware due to this.

Crosmando: Depends how the SS Portable guys react to the game becoming digitally available for purchase. They could go turn SS Portable into a patch which requires ownership of the GOG version of the game to install.
As the guy who built SSP (and SS2Tool) I can tell you that this is not going to happen. I don't know yet what I'd do with SSP if SS1 actually got a commercial release. It might depend on the way the release is handled this time.
That being said there has been no contact between me and Steve Kick or GOG since the SS2 release. I know as much as you do.
Incidentally, if you are reading this Steve, note that the SSP launcher is released under GPL. The source is in SYSTEMSHOCK-Portable\RES\SSP\src\SSP.bat Thank you! http://i.imgur.com/872Nlxb.gif

Forgive me for butting in here but could you tell me what you would like to happen in the rare event that System Shock 1 does get a commercial re-release? Please keep in mind that I am merely asking out of curiosity and not confirming anything one way or the other, I'd just like to have this kind of info for future reference, if you don't mind :)

Personally I don't see anything gained by a commercial re-release as it won't finance a single new game. And people can already play System Shock as it is.
Apart from that it's not really a question of what I wish, but I can give you a few suggestions: Take SS1, DOSBox and politely ask Malba Tahan if you can use his mouselook mod. Slap these together yourself and you'll have a solid game release. And I'll be out of it.
You wouldn't really want to use the SSP launcher anyway. It's too oldschool and complicated and some components are not really necessary any more, like the DGVesa support for running the game natively on WinXP.

If you can get the rights for the ICE Breaker handbook or the Sybex Strategies and Secret Guide you'll also have an awesome addon (Be quick about those, before someone else gets his grubby hands on them.). And of course you'll find some more on our boards, like the , old [url=https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=421.0]promo material, the Mac version of SS1, etc. You know your way around.

Interesting :) Thank you very much for the info :)

Unfortunately, the Mac version with SheepShaver requires the original Mac ROMS, if I recall correctly, so that would be out of the question if a re-release were to actually happen.
Maybe having a physical edition re-release would be less pointless? Bundle it with SS2 for added value.

Uhhh no? Just wanted to talk about a game :)
I know why I'd want to see a re-release of the original System Shock, though my reasoning might be considered offensive to the people involved in the development of SSP because I don't have all the facts.
I so want a SS1 release here on GOG, I freaking loved that game!

(p.s: did you see those SS2 screens in the CryEngine3? Wow)

EDIT: woops

Too good to be true... well, I for one would be glad to part from my hard-earned money if the rumors proved to be valid!
Though I'm a big fan of the second chapter, I never had the chance to play the first, so a new relase would definitely be very welcomed.
I don't know about you but I want to go play SS 2 now.

Could you PM me your reason?

You mean there's a place I can legally buy it? At normal price? Preferably in a downloadable form instead of a physical one?
Ebay has it for about €25, Amazon (US) has it for ~$20. German Amazon starts at ~€13 for an open box, with all the problems that has. And of course, add to that cost the time needed to set up the game.

A commercial re-release of a classic is always welcome, since there will always be people who haven't played said game, for whatever reason. Saying that the game is playable does not mean that the game is obtainable as well.
You can download the game and it runs out of the box. If you have money to spend there are more worthy causes than 20 year old computer games: http://www.greecedebtfree.org/donate

Just serious.

I'd rather see Greece crash and burn again than to give up my good old games.
