What I gather from this: "You didn't like the game, or had your doubts...?

Here, take an all-around worse version of the game for free, we sincerely hope it convinces you this game is worth paying for!

Actually, it's more like demo version than a free-to-play, but we didn't tell you that."

Well, at least the story content is there. I will probably try it for it's sake.

Cameron: I played SWTOR at launch for about 4 months. I played a ton for the first 3 weeks, then got busy and cancelled my sub because of that. The game itself was awesome. Here's my take on the restrictions Being allowed to level your characters to level cap is amazing value for free. The class quests are really outstanding and the story for my character (Jedi Knight) was one that kept me engaged. Even if you're only allowed 1 character on the F2P account, it's worth it to level to max just to experience the stories. Also, the locations are cool, Coruscant was amazing. Space-battles are on-rails, super fun (I loved them) but 3 per week will probably satisfy your needs Fewer crew skills will only really hamper you if you plan to raid. Most of the restrictions really only seem to affect end-game players, but those are people likely willing to subscribe anyways. Some inconveniences are levied against free-players, but you will be able to experience the class story arc and many of the planet stories without much in your way. Basically, it's a massive demo, you can get to level cap for free. If you like it, subscribe and raid, if not don't bother, because it becomes P2W at that point.
Reading this, I actually feel bad for taking such a negative tone...

Alright, I'll give it a shot. Hell, I played Age of Conan for a while and could enjoy myself! ; D

I'm curious how things like crew skills will be done if you sub for a month, learn/level them, then let the sub time run out. If you can keep them all then I don't think that part is too bad.

For someone who just wants to play casually, limiting Warzones and Flashpoints might not be that big a deal. I would look at it as a way to limit my play time so I don't become addicted and play in all my free time :P

If you can get gear and then can't equip it later on unless you pay, that's BS. Also limiting the numbers of time you can be revived. On a PVP server, people ganking can cost people money thanks to that. However I'm going see how they limit things if you sub for a month then want to go free after. I have a collector's edition I got on clearance for $20, but haven't used yet as I was waiting until closer to the f2p date.
I didn't get SWTOR last year for exactly this reason. F2P is the only reason I still play MMORPGs; after I saw Bioware's budget for this game, I knew it would only be a matter of time. The fact that they went F2p in less than a year is probably a sign that they aren't coming close to their profit margins and so long as we play conservatively, they will be forced to make more concessions. They've probably lost quite a few subscribers since WoW: MoP and GW2 have come out and are desperately trying to claw back into the competitive MMO class. To do that they are going to have to do a lot more than their proposed F2p model.
Heh, I might even check this out, just to see some of the character stories.
There is no pay to win. Free players can pay to use specific epic items, or they can subscribe and equip them as much as they want. The loot is not paid for - you still need to find it in the game. Pay to win means buying items or stats directly without having to "work" for them. Also, I should mention that equipment in this game is not all that important. All bosses are tightly tuned in such a way that execution matters far more than your gear, and the performance differences between tiers of raid drops are symbolic from what my guild can tell considering there is no in-game combat log.

Just to clarify, the way death works in TOR is that you can either res on the spot or back at a nearby medical center. The walk is never very long, but being ressed on the spot gives you a few seconds of stealth to either advance past the troublesome mob or retreat for another quick try. Dying repeatedly means the spot res takes longer to activate, however.

Whitecroc: Current subscriber here. Enjoying the heck out of the game while it lasts. ;) There's an amazing amount of content available for free here, although three Warzones a week might be a bit stingy. Not that I've actually tried them yet - not a PvP person, myself - but if they're as long as the WoW Battlegrounds are... Actually, come to think of it, that's the average length of a dungeon, too.
avatar
jamyskis: So basically pay-to-win. No surprises there then.
avatar
Whitecroc: No pay-to-win. Cash shop items are cosmetic (although the Darth Nihilus mask is cool enough to qualify for pay-to-win on its own) and the only thing I've heard about so far that might be construed as this is experience boosts.
avatar
Gazoinks: I don't know what any of this means. What are Operations? What are Flash Points?
avatar
Whitecroc: Operations are raids: highly challenging content designed for larger groups of people - in this case, eight or sixteen dudes. Flashpoints are dungeons and are designed for four people.
avatar
Cavalieroscuro: So, if you don't pay you can't enjoy the story?Mass Effect style :D Thanks EA
avatar
Whitecroc: The story is completely soloable. There are a number of missions that require groups, but they are all optional.
avatar
MarioFanaticXV: Story is really all I cared about. ...Even if Bioware did butcher the KotOR time period with this game.
avatar
Whitecroc: You're gonna have to elucidate that.
avatar
jamyskis: The question is, how much of the story can you realistically see without all of those extras?
avatar
Whitecroc: The vast, vast majority. Seeing all the Flashpoints will take a few weeks, of course. Operations make up a very small part of the story, but there is a developing storyline tying the latest two together, as well as to the quest line of a certain planet. Also, Operations are frickin' awesome. Fantastic atmosphere and encounter design.
avatar
Avogadro6: Could a former SWTOR player kindly explain how big these limitations are? I see Crew Skills are professions, Operations and Warzones group activities, but what is Quick Travel? Teleporting through known locations?
avatar
Whitecroc: Quick Travel lets you jump between discovered nodes on a given planet. It's equivalent to the Hearthstone of World of Warcraft, except you can choose your destination, at the expense of not being able to jump between zones. The Fleet Pass is a teleport to your faction's fleet station. It's got a prohibitively long cooldown, though, and is rarely used more than once a day.
avatar
Purebreed: I really thought this game would last longer that SWG, guess I'm wrong. I give it 6 months, then the servers are going down for good.
avatar
Whitecroc: Don't be such a nay-sayer; don't you know it's rude to wish closure on an MMO? People are invested in them. (Been wanting to tell someone off about this for a while; you're the closest I could find). :P ...Aww, who am I kidding? The game will cease updating soon enough. I don't think they'll pull the plug for a while, but I can definitely see this game going the incredibly depressing direction of WAR: a living dead MMO. I need to hug my cat now. I got all sad.
HA! I have a buddy is BEYOND into Star Wars and MMOS. He'll play ToR until the lights go out. ;)

Thanks for the info Whitecroc and Cameron, it's more or less as I thought, and it all seems pretty reasonable. Now the only thing left to know is when it goes F2P.

But when it's free to play i would like to finish my story or when i just can't see myself playing it anymore, i can finally uninstall it ;)

Too many restrictions. Not interested.
I was planning to get back when free to play is out, how do they manage old accounts with eight characters with the new restrictions ?
Looks like an "enhanced demo". Smart move. Might just give it a try then.

To say you are getting to play the game for free, the restrictions are not all that bad. You still get to play the game, and if there are things you want that require money, you may only have to pay once. For subscribers we get access to everything because we are paying for it every month. But that is up to you I guess. If you don't want to play, don't play.
Instead of free to play I rather just be charged a one time 50 dollar price and get all the story content in an offline mode that is just the story and forgetting about all the multiplayer options. In other words, I would just like KOTOR III. But It seems like from what I read in other places SWTOR ignores or changes what happened in KOTOR II which was my favorite of the first two games... So, even a total single player option with a single on time fee I don't know how much interest i would have... (hmm it sounds like from this thread that the story is available free2play.... Interesting)

I see they are opting for a failure of their free to play model as well as their subscription only model. Geniuses over there, aren't they?

Servers shut off for good in 24 months it is then!
