Fenixp: Sturgeon's Law, my friend, Sturgeon's Law. It has always applied, it always will. And the new Tomb Raider was actually pretty darn good - even innovative in some aspects, albeit minor ones.
I wouldn't go so far as to say 90% of new games are crud but yes, a significant portion is (to me anyways).

Haven't had the chance to play the new TR yet. Ahh, TR, the memories of jumping to my death repeatedly. Good times.

Killing people? OK
mass murdering people? OK too
torturing people? fine with me
abusing women? cool with me
racism? Bring it on
burning people alive? Where do I sign?

BUT SWEARING? HELLS NAW!!!

it's the same with american television. The newest breaking bad episode (yeah, I know). Bullet to the head? Sure, let's go. But mute the "F" word, because it may be inappropriate for children.

btw. I would like to see GTA V british english edition. That shit would be hilarious.

I don't mind cursing at all if it fits the character, setting and milieu. My gripe with it is only when it's out-of-character and evidence of bad writing.
Couldn't give one iota of a fuck.

The only time swearing bothers me in anything is if it simply doesn't fit in the context of a character's personality or what's happening, etc., although, even then, that isn't because it's swearing. Take, for instance, The Walking Dead comics. The writing throughout that is awkward enough but there was a character in the 18th volume who said something like, "Now I'm going to beat the fuck fucking fuckedy fuck out of one of you with my bat", which is fucking dreadful as far as I'm concerned. The same character has all of these other stupid lines but the funny part is that he's supposed to be threatening; I just can't take him seriously though, because nothing he says sounds like anything anyone I can think of would say.

But, no, I can't think of a game I've played that's ever bothered me because of swearing. Watched a review of Kane and Lynch 2 a while ago where the reviewer criticised the frequent use of "fuck" but, when I played it, it didn't bother me in the slightest, and I'm not sure why it reflected on the game's score for whoever this was. Then again, I do find it funny when people criticise this sort of thing in any medium when what they're criticising includes tons of violence, maybe some nudity, stereotypical portrayals of specific characters, et cetera.

Anyway, relevant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i93-u39XV7I

Oh I'm not saying 90% of new games are crap - I'm saying 90% of all games are crap, new and old. We just had the fortune to forget about those 90% in case of older titles.

To quote the Shadowrun Returns review at Portable Gaming Region: "So for God’s sake, if we can handle themes like violence, alcohol, drugs, sexual abuse, prostitution rings, torturing, dead babies, corpse desecration, and snuff films, why the hell do we have to read through sentences like “you’re full of drek” and “we’ll get the mother-fraggers this time”!? I mean, seriously devs? Bad language is where you draw the line?"
Don't see a problem if it fits the game - Kane & Lynch for example. You take out swearing it's silence everywhere.

Both yes and no.

For example, I have every number of CD Action (polish gaming magazine) since 1997 to 2003. And there were a lot more reviews of the games. Like 20 different PC games a month and many of them got solid ratings.

I even spoke with people who worked in that magazine since the beginning, and thet say that as much - there were much mainstream games than are now., so it wasn't a problem to find 20 good games a month to review

It's easy to explain. Production costs. There were many many more companies making mainstream games, because it was cheaper.

For example, today you have one Football Manager and pretty much nothing more except some niche shit and Fifa manager. Back in 1998, you had like 3 different managers a month (at least few of them good ones :P). There were much more RTS games, historical RTS especially.

Today, to make an AAA game you need millions of dollars. So there are less AAA games released a month, but they are higher quality, it's harder to step on a unplayable turd like in the past.

But now we have an indie scene that looks pretty much the same as mainstream companies back then.

btw. of course there was a shitload of crap back then released as well. Maybe even more, but less people knew about this, because the internet was still kinda new.

Don't throw that horse shit at me you stupid twat! I never said games shouldn't have swearing, I did not say it offended me in anyway... maybe if you actually read my main post you would of understood what I was talking about. It is amazing how easy people jump to conclusions on this subject isn't it.

Seriously... did you actually read the bloody post?

My point is not to do with removing swearing as a whole, it is about the fact it is completely over used, with absolutely no tact or meaning what so ever. I did not say a damn thing about swearing should not be in the game at all.

Go onto Gamefaqs and post with the other 15 year olds if you're going to be posting shite like this.

You have a good point but there is also a point where it goes too over the top and just turns cringe worthy. No swearing is just as bad as too much swearing. No one ever seems to think of a fine line inbetween.

Not just the dialog, there seems to be a real gap in the market for a full on Guy Richie, 'Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels' cock-er-ney GTA-like set in good ol' Lun-daaarn, init?
The GTA series has been to London before for the 1969 (any little known 1961) GTA 1 add ons, they should really come back, jellied eels on me!

I might just be getting old but I remember when it was used less and abit more for comedic timing etc.

What do you think?
I say it fits with its setting and genre, unlike Game of Thrones where the swearing words feels so out of place in the medieval fantasy setting with words like F###,C#&*, D@*%, etc.
As in real life, a little doesn't bother me at all. However, too much can get annoying quickly.
