Duffadash: Oh, by the way, just to poke the embers in the fireplace... Is Phantasmagoria a survival horror game?
I'd call it a horror adventure game. If you played Gabriel Knight, it's like that.

But Gabriel Knight isn't about surviving at all. Phantasmagoria is almost entirely based around surviving (or more likely; dying)
Also, very fittingly, I just saw this posted on slashdot.

Silent Hill (THERE WAS A HOLE HERE) and Clocktower (SNIP SNIP SNIP) all day erry day.

Fatal Frame is also good (particularly 2), Haunting Ground is Clocktower 4, Condemned is strangely eerie, Call of Cthulhu is insane, Amnesia/Penumbra is bloody good, The Path is unnerving, The Void/Pathologic is more disturbing than scary.

FEAR, Resi, AitD, Dead Space and the like are...eh, sometimes jumpy. Not really scary.

Nah they're the same genre. Phatasmgoria is a point and click horror adventure game. Looks terrible to be honest. FMVs are so cheesy!

If you like adventure games, check out Sanitarium. It's not only the best adventure game I've played (well... maybe Neverhood was better. Let's call it a tie), it's a superb horror game. Loved loved loved the setting and atmosphere

Where exactly in "Survival Horror" does it say that it must be an FPS?
And yes, Phantasmagoria was entertaining, kindda bad, but entertaining.
In Sanitarium, the 3 first scenes were awesome. After that it decreased in quality. Still one of my favourites though.
Never got my hands on the Neverhood. Seems kind of low-brow though?

ViolatorX: 1. I'd say the best survival horror games are generally in the past mainly because its something we have now taken for granted and shock factor is hard to replicate, for that reason I can fully understand resident evils transformation into the modern games of being more of an action adventure.

==============================
I'd say the best scary games are

a. Resident Evil 1 + 2 Last time I screamed in a game was when the licker jumped through the two way glass in the police station.

b. Illbleed- Probably the weirdest yet most innovative horror game of its time, It relied more on traps and setting than monsters and despite being very 80s b-movie style it plays very well and is a real challenge.

c. The Suffering - Best combination of action and horror in a game setting, kept me playing from start to finish some enemys are creepy esp the ones with all the bright green syringes in them and the burning children.

d. Deadly premonition, Though ive played very little, The first level tripped me out slightly with those weird creatures and zany characters, heard its a real cult hit apparently.

e. Slightly less survival horror but realms of the haunting and clive barkers undying had horror elements as a main undertone

f. Cant say I got into fatal frame, Wanted to try Parasite Eve when I had a modded psp but was one of the only psx games i couldnt get to work :(

G. Also did anyone ever play Martian Gothic: Unification? , Heard rave reviews about it, but never got around to playing it

GameRager: 1. I agree. Alot of the best horror games were made back when the genre was first being cracked into and defined rather than just copy/pasted to make a buck.

a. I also loved/love the older resident evils....someday I might even finish them....:D I have so far finished RE2 as the guy then girl, and started into but never finished the girl first then the guy. I love how it plays through differently depending on which character you play first though. I've also played 1/4 through RE3(love the Nemesis character and the choices at certain moments gameplay mechanic). On RE1 i've gotten about as far as finishing the mansion and heading outside, and loved what I did play of it. And I also finished the castle in RE4. (Got to the house in Code: Veronica and finished Dead Aim completely as well, btw)

b. I might look this up someday. It sounds very intriguing.

c. Torque's moral choices throughout the game was one of the things(Plus I LOVE prison horror games) I loved the most about this game. I saved as many as I could the first time, then let everyone die the second time through. Definately a MUST PLAY for horror fans of every stripe.

d. It is a very niche horror title, and alot of people call it a Twin Peaks of the video game world. I got as far as the Hospital on Day One I think....alot of confusing subplots and things to remember made my OCD(I don't like open worlded games much as it sresses my mind ya see) flare up something awful so I put it down but I plan to pick it up again someday.

E. Undying is also a MUST PLAY imo and I esp loved the twist ending parts.

f. The way Parasite Eve 1/2 portray evil as coming from within(in a way) made these games stand out to me alot as I played through them. Plus add to that the fact that almost ANYTHING could come around the corner all mutated and you got yourself a hit horror game. You should definately try to find and play a copy of this someday.

G: I played part of it, but never finished it. It is kinda hard finding your way around sometimes and figuring what to do while being chased by near impossible to kill monsters but the storyline and setting looks amazing from what I did play of it.
Parasite eve series is backwards compatable on ps3 so I'll be sure to check out, I shouldnt have sold it when I got the strop that I couldnt get it to work on my modded psp.

Illbleed is definately worth looking into though it was on dreamcast only.
what??? no Alone in the Dark even the dos graphics were scary...
