Thought I'd start a thread about this genre.

I remember getting Blair Witch: Rustin Parr when I was about 10 years old simply because the box was cool, I didn't even know what the game was about. My god I was scared shitless.

The farthest I managed to get without pooping myself and never playing the game again was the church. Probably no more than 20 minutes total into the game, hehe.

What other survival horror games are there out there?
Amnesia's all you need bro.
Clocktower is interesting in that it is like a slasher film in almost every way. In most of the games you do not even posess any weapons at all.

Silent Hill is of course a must-play. Especially the second and third games.

Penumbra is supposedly very good, and by the same people who recently made Amnesia.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, is good, while quite buggy on the PC.

Resident Evil is of course the best known games of the genre. Especially the 4th one should be good.

And then there's of course Alone in the Dark, where one of the games are even here on GOG. Not one of the better games, sadly.

Penumbra sucked =/

And Amnesia looks really stupid from trailers. You just run away from sounds..
Oh, almost forgot about gog's two favourite games!
System Shock 1 & 2!

Which is in fact more realistic than running around and shooting zombies with a pumpgun ;-) If you want some action it's maybe not the right game, but if you really want to be scared (in the positive way) and feel helpless, it's maybe a try. I really like the idea behind it and want to play this game, but my old desktop isn't good enough and my notebook has only an integrated graphics.

There is a demo btw.

System Shock 2 always had me on edge, but that was a long time ago.
Other than that there are the Alone in the Darks, Resident Evils and Silent Hills which are generally more about the survival than the horror.
Other than Amnesia I can't really remember a recent example of survival horror that was actually scary. That Call of Cthulhu one from a few years back had some nice scary bits.. I think it was Dark Corners of the Earth.
The PS2 had the Fatal Frame games, those were pretty creepy.

Overture was unnerving, but Black Plague takes the trophy. It was a chilling ride from start to finish, and was one of the most intense, scariest games I've played.

Requiem was a bit of a letdown due to illogical puzzles, but on retrospect, it had some pretty good atmosphere there.

Can you please define survival horror?

Oh c'mon, Resident Evil 4 is just an action-adventure game with some horror stuff inside :-P

The only, TRUE survival horror of the series is the first one, and maybe the two subsequent ones. RE isn't a survival horror anymore from the PS2 era onward....
If there's any genre where the fans will needlessly bicker over what qualifies to be part of that genre, it is survival horror. I am sick of all the arguments about what counts or what doesn't count. If it's a horror game, and you have to survive, it's survival horror.

Well that certainly rules out L4D.
What about Dead Space? I just got it, and though the controls are not the best I've ever used (even on max. sensitivity the mouse still reacts sluggish), it seems scary enough.

Oh yeah, I loved System Shock 1 & 2. Some people say Dead Space is more SS3 than Bioshock. I liked Bioshock, but it wasn't SS3. I haven't played Dead Space enough to make a judgement. Any comments?
If you don't think Amnesia is any good then it sounds more a case of you want an action game with horror elements in which case Doom 3, Fear, Metro 2033 & Stalker are all good ones. Fatal Frame was also a really good one (had a sequel too) but you'd need to buy an xbox/ps2... think there was one on the wii too but I don't know if it was any good.
