SmCaudata: snip
Living in Britain. Where laws exist against kids watching 18 rated movies.

I watched predator when I was about 11, by 12 I'd watched nearly every single arnie movie up until that point. Watched Scary Movie at around 10

And I played a cracked version of thrill kill.. youtube it now I'll wait...

The law isn't against banning children from ever playing violent games, it's forcing ignorant parents to learn a little bit about what games their children are playing, so they don't buy Saints Row 2, and expect Mario the free roaming adventure. a situation my friend in retail had to diffuse the other day.

SmCaudata: Actual enforcement of ratings would pass the parenting to the 16 year-old kid working at the brick and mortar store.
Because the responsibility of being a parent is just too much in this day and age. But then, personal responsibility has always been a bit of a sticking point with people. All those icky consequences. Best to pass the buck.

LOL... read the rest of what I wrote. Teenagers are not personally responsible. It is a normal phase of adolescent development. If parents of these teenagers want to allow some freedom but still protect them in some way, there should be a way of doing that. That is all I'm saying.

Again, what I don't want to have happen is for games to be banned. Games are an easy target because they are a luxury item. Newsprint and other forms of "necessary" media are easier to protect. Get enough people behind a game ban and you will end up with the rules in Australia. Having a legally enforced rating will make it easier for the game companies to protect themselves from stupid people.

You can have all the ideals you want, but your ideals seem to clash with the reality in this country. This isn't an attack. I too would love to see all this stuff unregulated, but the fact of the matter is that it will never happen and it will never work. Both you and I know that. At times it is better to be pragmatic.

Tulivu: I was just answering your question about TV. Your game rating system seems much fairer, all of those just get lumped into Mature.

cheesetruncheon: That's my one criticism of this law, if you want to restrict access to the 17+ games, you need to establish a better ratings system, we're lucky enough that on the most part we use the same ratings system we use for our films.

PEGI's European presence really pisses me off though, there have been pushes to try and get it to replace the BBFC, and the way I see it, it's harsher than the BBFC because I dunno Germany doesn't like violence or something. I like the concept of having my games rated the same way my films are being rated. I don't like the idea that the rest of Europe say bayonetta is an 18, when there's nothing really in it to elevate it past our 15 rating. It just devalues the impact of an 18 rated game, if you get a BBFC rated 18 action film, you can expect heads to explode, you see a BBFC 18 rated action game, you can expect, you've guessed it, heads to explode.
If it weren't for the BBFC I'd be unable to play a lot of console games as the vast majority of them are rated PEGI 18. I really hope PEGI doesn't replace BBFC.

That's fairly true. Most games and movies rated 18 or 17+ elsewhere are downgraded to 15 in the UK. And Ireland because we just follow what you guys do.

Yes. That was me agreeing with you. ; )
