As our catalog gets bigger and better every week, it's easy to lose track of some of the awesome games that we have to offer. We've been running one day "Gaming Gem" promos for a while now to highlight some classic titles that don't get the love of some of our best-known blockbusters like Baldur's Gate or Duke Nukem 3D. To celebrate summer, for the next two weeks until July 25th, we're going to run a Gaming Gem promo every day, so you can rediscover these lesser-known classics! Grab that plastic toy shovel and dig out gem after gem over the next 18 days. We think every game we're going to be offering on our Summer GOG.com Gem Extravaganza will be an excellent title, and we hope you give them all a try.

Today's hidden gem is here to show you how the legendary Unreal series got its start before it became the definitive competitive tournament game of the Internet. This ultimate shooter classic had stunning graphics for the time, giving the era's 3D graphics cards a real workout, while the gameplay made sure you kept your fingers limber.

You are a prisoner who crashed on an unknown alien planet. The story is generic but it's not the enthralling plot twists that earned Unreal Gold a place in the pantheon of FPS games. The dazzling graphics, artistic level design, and sheer awesome gameplay is what Unreal is all about. Escape from Na Pali and then you're ready for the second serving in the form of a mission pack Return to Na Pali. Recover very important weapon research logs on the crashed military spaceship, three new weapons, and nearly 20 missions to shoot, blast, and charge your way through!

Check for yourself where all of the Unreal hype originated from in this Unreal Gold pack for only 3.99$ for the next 24 hours.

jamyskis: Unreal was one of the most dominant titles of the late 90s.

Gilou: Are you sure it was a dominant title? I have been playing videogames since 1995 or so and the 1st tie I heard about Unreal 1 was around the release of Unreal 2
It was dominant alright; and if it wasn't dominant, it was at least (in)famous for its extreme graphics. It was pretty much the Crysis/Far Cry of its day, a game which left even high-end computers of the day gasping for air. I remember cracking open an issue of PC Gamer and seeing their LSD-inspired "Real...UNREAL!" ad in the inside of the front cover.

It was released not long after Quake 2 was launched, and it led to something of a graphics engine rivalry that's led up right now to UE3 and idTech 4.
You got me!! My Wallet 3 - 1 GOG sales.

I agree, Unreal was a game people were trying to get to run back in the day, the graphics were excellent when it was originally released. I remember upgrading from a AMD 400mhz, 450mhz and 550mhz to play this one!

@Ubivis - Thanks for the mod link.
Great game. Was shocked at the state of the art graphics back then it made my eyes hurt. Also the mod music worked well for the game.

The moment that sticks out for me is when you just get out of the ship and you look into an alien world and the haunting excellant music kicks in. Ah fond memmories

Timelegend: Yes!!! Another one in my wishlist :)

Where do I get the High-Res Mods? Or are they included?

Ubivis: They are not included:

High Res Pack: http://www.unrealtexture.com/

Or even better, the DX10 Engine Update: http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/page1.htm

:)

And as usual, all information are stated on the gogwiki as well ;)

Just gone live about 1 month ago ;)

We also have an GOG Integration, that you can show your shelf and wishlist on your gogwiki profile to others (Firefox needed at the moment for the function to update your list) ;)

Revolutionary when it came out, will pass on it for now and concentrate on already purchased games...
Totally unreasonable at $9.99, instabuy at $3.99! :P
Too bad I already have it. Amazing game ... and the music by Alexander Brandon, sooo good.
Already have it.
Good promo!
Nice! I just bought Postal 2, but at this price I think I'll buy it tonight and play tomorrow. :)
I just can't see myself playing it... even at this price. 2 to 2, Summer Hidden Gem Sale. Still focusing on previously purchased games.
I just realized I never played the expansion 'Return to NaPali'. Now, after 12 years, I will... :)
Hate to sound like a beggar, but could someone gift me this game? Will return the favor later with another gift, promise! Bank munched my money reserves as an "annual credit card usage payment", and my Unreal Gold disks were stolen by some ugly mofo some years ago :( Have like 2.31$ on PayPal right now...

Back of the net!

GOG 3 vs My Wallet 1

Bought this game when it originally came out, but it ran like a bitch on my pc at the time.

I must admit I had a feeling this would come up; next up constructor. (....pretty please)
I think, I'll wait for an Unreal promo with all parts.
