As our catalog gets bigger and better every week, it's easy to lose track of some of the awesome games that we have to offer. We've been running one day "Gaming Gem" promos for a while now to highlight some classic titles that don't get the love of some of our best-known blockbusters like Baldur's Gate or Duke Nukem 3D. To celebrate summer, for the next two weeks until July 25th, we're going to run a Gaming Gem promo every day, so you can rediscover these lesser-known classics! Grab that plastic toy shovel and dig out gem after gem over the next 18 days. We think every game we're going to be offering on our Summer GOG.com Gem Extravaganza will be an excellent title, and we hope you give them all a try.

Today's hidden gem is here to show you how the legendary Unreal series got its start before it became the definitive competitive tournament game of the Internet. This ultimate shooter classic had stunning graphics for the time, giving the era's 3D graphics cards a real workout, while the gameplay made sure you kept your fingers limber.

You are a prisoner who crashed on an unknown alien planet. The story is generic but it's not the enthralling plot twists that earned Unreal Gold a place in the pantheon of FPS games. The dazzling graphics, artistic level design, and sheer awesome gameplay is what Unreal is all about. Escape from Na Pali and then you're ready for the second serving in the form of a mission pack Return to Na Pali. Recover very important weapon research logs on the crashed military spaceship, three new weapons, and nearly 20 missions to shoot, blast, and charge your way through!

Check for yourself where all of the Unreal hype originated from in this Unreal Gold pack for only 3.99$ for the next 24 hours.

Was never sure if I should try it, but for this price I give it a go. I hope it's more like the older shooter, I already got UT2004 and like it.

Just to be safe, to ask for a multiplayer CD-Key is only needed for the Tournaments series?

Bodkin: This is hard.

Ubivis: Why is it hard?? It is a great game... BUY IT!!! :)

Search High res mod Unreal on google maybe? Or ask that gogger. I know Gog can't include them for legal reasons but someone might know.

They are not included:

Or even better, the DX10 Engine Update: http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/page1.htm

:)

And as usual, all information are stated on the gogwiki as well ;)

Horray! What a classic. A friend of mine programed the environmental effects for this game when he was just a wee kid... what a genius!

Thanks to Ubivis above for all the High-Res links.
already own it .
Got it already unfortunately, but Knights and Merchants is still waiting to be played by me :)

How does this class as a "hidden gem" though? Unreal was one of the most dominant titles of the late 90s.

Are you sure it was a dominant title? I have been playing videogames since 1995 or so and the 1st tie I heard about Unreal 1 was around the release of Unreal 2

Maybe not dominant but Unreal 1 was "famous".
Unreal was very popular in germany. I never played it, but you knew it by name. It's one of the series you automaticly think of when talking about 3D-shooter - like Half-Life, Quake or Doom (edit: and of course some other games ...).

I'm verry happy that hidden games like this are in the promos. Let's intrepret "hidden" just that the games from GOGs catalog deserve some more attention ;-)

I own this game from years ago, but on all my systems the formerly awesome sky textures are blocky and ugly (I think the game engine was optimized for the defunct 3dfx glide). Has this been fixed?
