<i>Today is the last day for our Hidden Gems Summer Extravaganza! To celebrate today's hidden gem, we're adding soundtracks, artworks, wallpapers, and a reference card to [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/independence_war_deluxe]Independence War Deluxe's bonus content. We've also added soundtracks to Independence War 2's bonus materials today. Pick that game up while you're at it for double the rockin' soundtrack awesomeness.

As our catalog gets bigger and better every week, it's easy to lose track of some of the awesome games that we have to offer. We've been running one day "Gaming Gem" promos for a while now to highlight some classic titles that don't get the love of some of our best-known blockbusters like Baldur's Gate or Duke Nukem 3D. We think every game we're going to be offering on our Summer GOG.com Gem Extravaganza will be an excellent title, and we hope you give them all a try.

Dear Smartypants McAdviceColumnist;

I am looking to pursue a career as a commander of an interstellar dreadnought. What should I do to train myself in preparation? I am 12.

--Starstruck

P.S.
What did you do to make your mother hate you so much she named you "Smartypants McAdviceColumnist"?

Dear Starstruck;

The studious youth looking to command a space ship across the interstellar lanes of space is probably doomed to a life of bitter disappointment and alcoholism, but with that proviso in place I would recommend that you investigate sophisticated simulations like such as "Independence War Deluxe". With Newtonian physics and a realistic flight model, this simulation brings a level of realism unseen in the space fighter sim market. As it turns out, controlling a wallowing space turkey armed to the teeth with particle beams is a more complicated endeavor than flying around in your space superiority fighter, and the skills you would learn from this game would prepare you well for your career.

Although horrible little children who mock others' names are more likely to find themselves in dull jobs like "Xeno-Accountant" or "Spacesuit Protein Spill Recovery Expert".

A complex storyline and branching mission structure combine with respectable graphics and a UI that helps make sense of the intricate issues that a space commander would need to balance help even terrible people like you feel in command of their hollow lives or, at least, the simulation.

Basically, I am suggesting that you pick up Independence War Deluxe for just $2.39, as the happy times that you spend pretending that you have a future will soon be eclipsed by the bleak despair of a grey and dull life wasted.

Best of Luck, Starstruck!

Gifts are between the giver and the reciever..Let them both be satisfied with it...It was freely given, and freely recieved, no one should feel obligated in any way. I don't understand how any can complain or attack or demean, or Whatever the people giving or recieveing gifts...Afterall, it's a good thing. Generosity is a virtue, and the reciever of said generosity has not commited any act of wrong they should be ashamed of. I grew up in a small converted barn, I didn't get everything I ever wanted, but, I got to tell you, when I did get something, nobody said I shouldn't have it, or that people are even worse off then I was, and I didn't deserve it. So, what I'm saying is, gifting makes this world a better place, no matter who recieves it, it helps to show others that people every where can have decency and kindness and caring to near-strangers. It makes this world a better place, shows a good example to follow, and I would not want that to ever be taken away. So givers thank you, and recievers, enjoy your gift(s)..Freely given and freely recieved. :D

I reckon that you have misconstrued what I have said.....It is one thing to give away gifts but it is entirely different when you keep begging for gifts once you have received them. It's very 'gollum' like behavior that I absolutely detest.However if you wish to give something to someone that that is entirely your prerogative.While you may do so please stop making preposterous insinuations....thank you.Besides $ 2.39is very cheap (it's practically free, no?) and someone not being to afford that is rather absurd.

My apologies Lionel212008, however, I was being general for a reason, what I said had nothing to do with your comments..I have just been reading a few post over the last days that made me say this...if it was aimed at you I would have aimed it at you...Relax champ, we love you. ;-)

I thought it was intended that way...If I was too harsh in anything that I have said then you have my heartfelt apologies. Besides GOG is just way too awesome to stay angry or anything of that sort:D..
Ok, no problem mate. And sorry if you felt like I was talking about India when i've talked about third world.

I know you in India have principles, and most of you wouldn't beg for anything ever in your life.

And just for your info... 9,99$ is almost my one week's expenses...

Nabuchodonozor: Dude you already got like 5 games gifted in this Promo,

Seriously? You get 6 games as a gift, start begging and now you just make a troll post?

Yeah, I can't see why I should be polite for people offending me. My last post in here, because some of you just can't shut up...

Well, that is a difficult situation...I do understand this because I have faced adversity as well.

Well, 10 bucks in Poland isn't much, but not so little as well, if you don't have to support hungry kids, of course.

But i'm studying hard, and maybe things will be better next year. Or maybe next two years.

End of transmission from me. And don't worry, noone of you will se me asking for any free games anymore.

I seriously didnt see anyone offending you. What i saw was a guy who commented on your begging behaviour on this thread. And i do agree with him, while im totally ok with gifting, its really a noble act, i think begging for games after you have been gifted 6 times on this promo week alone is kind of abusing it.

And by the way, what do you mean by "i dont want to look like a poor guy from the third world"? Thats a stupid statement that only shows prejudice. I live in a third world country as you can see on my profile, and i never came here begging for free stuff. And i also have never received a gift here.

Neobr10: I think its because of the System Shocks engine, which is also used on Thief 1 and 2.
You are confused. The chances of Thief and System Shock having very much code in common are rather slim.

Neobr10: About todays deal, i was kind of disappointed, i was waiting for something really big on the last day of hidden gems.
...and all they gave us was one of the greatest sci-fi games ever made in the entire history of computer gaming.

I-War won't be everyone's cup of tea, so you can certainly be disappointed, but you cannot possibly claim that this was not "something really big" for the final gem in this series.

Since system shock 2 as well as thief 1 and 2 were created by the same developer...Looking glass then it is very likely that they are using the same code which I believe is the 'dark angine'
I live in Serbia and similar to Poland 10 bucks is much and not so much. You can spend it on fast food in a matter of minutes or eat 6-10 meals you cook, your choice. And when you have to pay the bills then you can't always afford to spend them on games. I really detest comments about "3rd world" when people sit comfortably in their houses and don't know what they are talking about :/

About System Shock: I know it's really complicated to get it to work on modern day PCs (I use DosBox with my own settings), but 2 years ago I tried a community version that is mobile (you can run it from usb) and it even has options to get higher resolutions than 640x480. I believe that it should be no biggie for GoG people to make something similar since all of the used utilities are free. It's a must play by anyone who likes old games and it would be a shame if it never gets here.

Mostly correct, although System Shock 2 was primarily made by Irrational Games (but it was certainly in conjunction with Looking Glass). And all three of those games do indeed use the Dark Engine. That's the first time anyone has mentioned System Shock 2 in this thread, though.
