Saturday-April 26-will me our 41st wedding anniversary and I would like to surprise my husband with a new game to play. I have already bought the following for him. There is Descent + Descent 2, Painkiller Black Edition, and Terminal Velocity. Now I know he likes 1st person shooters, flying combat, and strategy games. He's use to play Age of Empires and Warcraft years ago. Me I like RPG games and city building games but he says he doesn't have the patience to play them. But I sure if he had the right RPG game he would enjoy it.

So let me know some suggestions on what you think would make a good game for him

Thanks ahead of time for all the help.

Does he care about graphics when it comes to 1st person shooters?
Hm, the right RPG to me sounds like The Witcher 2 (or witcher series).

But if he likes strategy games, you could get him the Age of Wonder series; the new one is said to be pretty cool as well.

For FPS games, how about the Far Cry series? Also, the only flying combat game I've played is Skydrift.

I'm not for sure but I did get him the original Doom and Wolfestine. He seems to enjoy playing them. Also to let everybody know, he does have a Mac along with his several other computers.
As someone coming up on 14 years, 41 is awesome. I concur with the witcher series for RPG and there are a lot of FPS games out there new and old. Neverwinter Nights is also great RPG fun and a lot of hours of gameplay for the money. congrats on the 41 years!
IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 and a good flight stick?
quite certain there were some fps +rpg genre that quite good, just saying ;p

1. Blood(One Unit Whole Blood)
2. Shadow Warrior
3. Duke Nukem 3D
4. The Serious Sam games
5. Redneck Rampage Collection

These are 3D shooters that give the player nonstop action. Games that don't require a lot of waiting for stuff to happen.
FPS: SiN Gold

RPG: I found The Witcher series pretty good to get into and finish both games several times despite having a dislike for RPG or alternately if you think he will prefer a more light hearted RPG with good humor I would suggest Driftmoon, also a good RPG for inexperience players.
Congratulations! 41 years is just awesome.

I'd also recommend the Witcher series... some of the best RPGs out there. And maybe as a strategy option Divinity Dragon Commander (though admittedly I haven't tried it myself.) Perhaps Clive Barker's Undying and Deus Ex for shooters as well.
if you wanna get him to play some mix between rpg and strategy with a minimal level of city building, similar to warcraft 3, hit him with spellforce if he doesnt already have it

IMO, SpellForce isn't a terribly good game. The sequel is way, way better, and though it's probably technically not as good as WarCraft 3, SpellForce 2 doesn't take itself so seriously and it's better for it as far as I'm concerned.
