wodmarach: My first gen 360 is currently used as a media center expander and still works fine (but has had about 5 pot corrections in the last 2 years)

Navagon: Yeah, there are still a good few around. But they already seem to be the exception to the rule which is pretty shocking. When a 25 year old console is more likely to work today than a 1st generation 360 you can't help but think that something is pretty screwed up with that situation.
Dont forget alot of that has to do with complexity, compare the with the [url=http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/xbox360/jasper/f3c460fe.jpg]xbox(a Jasper in this case) and not only is the board more complex but the processors are too. Where the NES was probably hand laid out the modern systems require weeks/months of CAD work.

Production standards are drastically higher than they were back then too. Unfortunately I think that rasufelle has nailed it on this one. Products are designed to fail. I just don't think that the 360 (1st gen at least) was designed to fail anywhere near as spectacularly as it did.
Just for the record, I have gone through 2 Xbox 360's and am still using my original 40gb fat PS3 with an upgraded 250gb HDD. Before the 360, I never had to get a second console for any failure. Even with the original Xbox.

As far as how things are going, it's rather hard to say. I know this might seem biased since I don't have a 360 anymore, but I honestly think Sony is starting to take the lead. Following their new marketing strategy with Kevin Butler, they have gained stronger 3rd party support with EA and Valve, and still have some of the most visually impressive exclusive titles.

I don't think the PS3 will really get too far ahead though, both systems are impressive and have their own exclusive titles that are great. It really depends on how Sony approaches the next generation of gaming, as well as how they do with the NGP. Both markets understand their user base, but I think MS marketed the Kinect poorly compared to how Sony handled the Move.

EDIT: Bleh, sick and I'm making typos like mad

they may have advertised it badly but it outsells move massively there was alot of stealth advertising of kinect it's appeared in a lot of tv shows etc they also managed to make people think of it as the best party system around. I know people who don't talk about the xbox they talk about Dance central or kinectimals.

It outsells it but consider the market for it. The Wii's primary focus is kids. That is pretty much fact by now. Microsoft used the kinect to tap into the Wii market, by creating loads of titles targeted towards that particular demographic. Sony chose to advertise to their entire market rather than just focus on one particular segment.

I could argue the detrimental effects of this all day, but suffice it to say I think the entire thing is confusing and complicated.
All I saw that caught my attention was the cute little Pedobear avatar in the comments.

Roman5: Makes Fun Of RROD

http://www.gamesthirst.com/2011/04/12/sucker-punch-throws-a-sucker-punch-at-xbox-360-makes-fun-of-rrod/

So we already had Bulletstorm that made fun of RROD and now this...

When this generation is over I think that the xbox 360 will not be remembered by it's Halo's, Gears, Fables etc...it will be remembered by it's enourmous Failure rate and Hardware problems

What do you think about all of this?
I've had an Elite for around 4 years with one RROD and a Slim for 6 months (still have the Elite, it's my kid's box now, sees a lot of use still). Everyone seems to get one once, I haven't met anyone in awhile that's had more than one in the last few years.

I'll say this, when my 360 RRODed I paid nothing to have it shipped either way or fixed. I was also comped a month of Gold for missing 2 weeks of playtime. When my Wii's DVD drive crapped out I had to pay shipping one way and a 75 dollar repair (that POS is only worth around 150 now too!). When my bro in law's (at the time) launch PS3 died the new Slim PS3 had just come out. They wanted 20 dollars shy of the price of a brand new Slim to fix his old PS3. He didn't bother.

So, if you want to remember anything about this generation's failures or issues, remember how shitty Nintendo and Sony have treated their customers (and these aren't the only examples).
