E3 is on it’s dawn. Lots’ of new things announced but we’d like to remind you about some Good Old Games you can play right now.
This week’s weekend promo is all about Strategy First catalogue, and we're putting a flat 50% off rebate on all titles, that includes cream of the crop turn based strategies like for example the [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/jagged_alliance_2]Alliance . If you’re not a fan of squad based mercenary action, take a look at [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/disciples_2_gold]both of the Disciples titles. If the fantasy world is what you like but you're more of a direct person check out Sacred Gold, action RPG with an engaging story line.
After defeating various beasts and monsters maybe chill in your own spaceship ? Darkstar One is a space adventure sim.

Maybe you’re looking for a more managerial approach, if yes we’ve got something right for you.
You can choose from a more medieval setting in Patrician 3 or Port Royale 2.

After all of that serious stuff with those games, maybe kick back on your chair and enjoy some arcade madness with this series of [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/pro_pinball_fantastic_journey]Pinball ! Or just smash someone to bits in [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/flatout]FlatOut, a thrilling racer with fully destructible cars and environments ;)

For the full listing of all games including (simulations like Apache vs. Havoc see the promo page).
Will Pro Pinball: The Web ever be added to the catalogue? For me it's the best of the Pro Pinball series and it's kinda weird it's missing. Or are its rights owned by another publisher?

Leroux: What I noticed though is that the breaks between turns in Disciples 2 were pretty long. I managed to speed things up a little by turning off the Autosave function but I still had to wait at least 5 seconds after each turn while the computer was thinking. Is that normal or an indication that my PC is having slight issues with the game? Is not that much of a problem but I believe in the long run those 5 seconds might add up to something really annoying ...
avatar
KingBork: Hehe, I can tell that you wouldnt like the Silent Storm games (not available on gog, but I hope they will be) Which is in my opinion the best tactics games ever made (Its similiar to the Jagged Alliance games that are in this promo)... With one problem. The computer sometimes takes a million, billion, trillion HOURS to make its turn :P
Well, I checked and it was actually more than 30 seconds per turn, not 5, but then again in the demo scenario there are already several groups of enemies on the visible map when you start. Still, I was initially hoping I could play Disciples on my netbook; I probably won't be able to do that since Disciples Sacred Lands doesn't work on Win7 and as for Disciples 2, if my desktop PC already needs 30 seconds I shudder at the thought of how long my netbook would have me wait ... ;) (The opponents in TOEE already took considerably longer to make their turn when I tried it on my netbook).

tburger: Sorry - I don't think that helps you much ...

Lexor: Well, it helped a bit, because Im thinking about DarkStar One - is that game good in your opinion? Some people say it reminds Privateer, is that true?
Don't really know. Haven't had opportunity to play DarkstarOne nor Privateer 1. But you know what - check your PM and you tell me some day if that is true :-)
@everyone who bought a trading sim in this promo (thus Port Royale 2, Patrician 3 or even Darkstar One)
If you want to ask something/discuss the game in general/whatever for which you don't want to create a separate thread in the specific game's forum, you may be interested in The merchants' guild which was created to "cater for" specifically players of such games.

(Sorry if anyone feels like it's advertisement for my own thread, but I honestly think it might be useful for a number of people.)

I wouldn't mind having the answer to that question as well.

taczillabr: I thought I'd never be the person to say this but...

but how about an Interplay promo, next weekend? :)
Nor would I mind an Interplay promo. I really, really wouldn't mind that. ;_;
I'm thinking of getting either the two helicopter simulations or Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord. One thing that intrigues me about the helicopter simulations is the dynamic campaign.

Could someone give me a little more detail about the dynamic campaign in Apache vs. Havoc and Comanche vs. Hokum? A little more than the description "An underlying, non-linear and constantly evolving conflict, fought by AI-controlled units"? Do you have persistent friendly/enemy squadrons/ground units? Are your missions random or part of some strategy? etc ...

Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord also sounds really neat. I know the games are not really comparable, but if someone does have recommendations, I will gladly hear them. :)

AFAIK The Web is owned by Empire/Interplay , so there should be no problems with adding that game.

For me, The Web table is too similiar to Timeshock, but I would also like to see that game on GOG.

I think, now, that's the key word if we are talking about problems. :P
Shit. You're right. Other Pro Pinball games were not released by Interplay.
Just a bit of advice if you got win 7 64bit. I bought n downloaded n installed Apache vs. Havoc, when i run in and get by the options and menus it plays for about 30 secs the completly freezes read in another forum that i am gonna need to buy both helicopter sims to get it to run, and have them both installed in the same folder is in the following quote " So I broke down and purchased Comanche vs Hokum and that works perfectly fine under Windows 7 64bit and it allows me to play the Apache Havoc campaigns.

Thanks! I've got Win 7 32-bit and if I buy one of the two helicopter sims, I'll probably buy both. Right now though I'm leaning towards Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord.

Ok, it sounds like no one coming to this thread is inclined to say anything negative about ANY of these games. I guess I'll just have to try the same thing everyone always does.

Patrician 3 or Port Royale 2? What do you guys think?
Decided to finally grab Jagged Alliance 2, since I always hear good things about it.
Also got some other diverse titles: Port Royale 2, Flatout and Pro Pinball-Fantastic Journey.

Was tempted to buy even more, but decided to eat food this week instead. :P

The two games are in many ways similar, but not quite the same (and it's not only the setting /14th century Northern Europe vs. 17th century Carribbean/).
Have you ever played a trading simulation? If not, I strongly recommend Port Royale 2, as that's quite a bit easier to get into and much more forgiving (for example, in PR2 you only need money to gain ranks, while in P3 you need money AND the hard-to-earn respect of the citizens of your home town; in PR2, you pay an aount of money and get a ship instantly, while in P3 you have to supply the shipyard with wood, clothes, pitch and iron goods, and then wait weeks for your ship to be ready; etc).
If you are familiar with the genre or want a bigger challenge, you may also go for Patrician 3.

I've played many games with trading sim elements in them over the years, although to be honest I'm currently blanking on good examples. I'm not sure I've played anything that is as much a pure trading sim as Patrician 3 sounds like.
