The Steam Wallet, Steamworks' newest feature, is now available for public testing. With Steam Wallet, you can add value to your Steam account using any of the payment methods supported by Steam. Funds in your Steam Wallet may then be used to buy any item available on the Steam store, or combined with other payment methods to make a purchase.
To help us test this new feature, now in beta, click here (steam://storeurl/steamaccount/addfunds) and follow the instructions available there. Remember, even in beta, purchases are real. You should only fund with money you actually plan to use on Steam. And as always, please report any feedback here on the forums. Thanks!

It is good I think. You can easily buy your games and DLC's from Steam with this. But you need to keep your account safe. And maybe we will see Steam money cards on stores and with this gamers who don't have credit cards can buy the games from Steam.

Did I miss something or Valve just invented... Microsoft points ?
Unless you can gift them to somebody else or they decide to remove other payment methods I don't see the use...

Yeah, I don't see the big gain here either. It's cheaper to just use the CC directly, why go through a third-party payment method?

I guess there would be uses for this for someone with a debit or credit card, but I can't think of any.

This better not become the norm. When I go to buy something, I don't want someone holding on to the rest of the balance other than my bank.

That's the thing. They will let you buy even points and have sales with odd points. Then you'll spend your odd points on something you wouldn't buy otherwise just because you have some to spare or buy some new to afford that game you want that you need only one or two points more to buy.

How is that a good thing though? At least it seems.... dumb, if I could use just my card or paypal or whatever, my bank keeps the remaining amount gaining me intrest vs having points in a system that I may or may not even use again.
I've had like 1200 MS points for almost 6 months, granted, 14.99$ at a 2%APY is only like 5 cents. However, it does add up. I am always going to have points remaining.
I just dont see using this, I mean, perhaps using a credit card to buy the points then paying the card off during the grace period so I get more of a cash back reward from my CC and then if something intrests me snagging it... But, I dont see where that is really any different then just buying with my CC and then paying it off when I see something that I want as the balance of points gains me nothing.

this looks handy if you got kids - say you give them a part of their allowance in those points or whatever.

Back in my day we didnt get no fancy allowance, we mowed the lawn with a push mower for fun, and shoveled the driveway because we were told to do so. Then again, we also had to walk to school 10 miles in 4 feet of snow up hills both ways.... :)

SNOW? you had fucking SNOW? We had to walk to school, avoiding crossfire and german infantry tanks. And we LIKED it! We also didn't have computer games, we threw potatos at each other and we loved it. Otherwise we'd get a solid trashing (well, more than usual).
