I read an excellent article in Maximum PC's November issue (you should be able to pick it up on newsstands by now) with an interview with Randy Pitchford of Gearbox Software. And he was like, spin Steam off from Valve into its own company. Make it financially independent from Valve, and maybe, just MAYBE, they'll instead try their damndest to make money and improve services. To me, it seems like Valve is like, "These suckers keep coming to Steam even though they hate it because we make great games," or something like that.
Also, spinning Steam off (like Paradox did with Gamersgate) means that publishers don't have to let Valve win. Think about it. Valve, a rival publisher and developer MAKES MONEY off other publishers who put their games on Steam, because that's where the users are. If I were say, EA, I wouldn't like that very much.

You know what, people need to stop being so fucking paranoid. Either use the service or don't, but for fuck's sake, stop worrying your grey matter into mush over stuff that may or may not happen. It's not worth your time, or anyone elses.
All this talk of what may or may not happen to Steam, D2D, GOG whatever in the future is just getting tiresome.
At least raise complaints based on what has actually happened and not on what may happen in some hypothetical future. And for the love of everything, stop with the time old "renting" complaint. It's not valid. You're basically renting your games from anywhere, even retail and GOG (and if you don't believe me on GOG, read the T&C again, then consider what will happen when you *do* lose access to your local backups).

Amen.
Anyway, let's go back to talking about KOTOR.

Yes please. Which reminds me, I should play it again, but I've been sidetracked with Red Faction and Jedi Academy (yesh, go figure, I hate the movies, but that game is surprisngly fun).

Yeah, I have it on Steam (argh, crap) and I should have just asked nicely for a PAX code for KOTOR instead, but I just had to buy it for $9.99. I was stuck at that first city place you end up in because it always friggin crashes. I tend to play as a good guy (or at least, one with at the very least a brief spot of morals) then as the jackass, but I always feel bad about my decisions that way. I have to walk to a mirror and remind myself it's just a game.
Oh, and Jedi Academy multiplayer, anyone?
Always worth a read for KotOR fans
Contains spoilers for those who haven't played the game though.

bansama: But the fact is simple. Even *IF* Valve went out of business, Steam is large enough to attract several interested parties who would purchase it and continue supplying the service to the existing customer base.
And in the highly unlikely event that current games are no longer available, just go get a "fix", plenty already exist out there for Steam based games.

And if we ever did lose the ability to play them, well, they're just games.
Perspective, people.
