That saying I like the idea that if you played a game like crazy that valve would recognise that and toss you a dlc or discount on sequel. Reminds me of being a little kid with my 4 games on the apple 2b. i would have been very happy if someone gave me a new game or added level to play to thank me for loving their game.
The steam level and improved steam experience makes me dislike their implementation though.

... it was just before the technology of fun was lost to humanity .... so people began to play without achieving anything. And it could have been the end of the world as we know it. However, a crafty conclave of mysterious people whose identities remain mystery, saved the day by achieving the great library of achievements to achieve. This wasn't Fun but it seemed like the next best best thing (once a couple of TF2 hats were thrown on top ....).
But now that the magic power of the achievements is turning to shovelfeature ..... will the guild of badge crafters be able to save the day once again ? Will they succeed in hyping virtual nothingness to the masses ? Mwahahah ...
...ok I'll stop right now. I need to hurl my brain. I can do hollywood scripts all day long, provided you let me die upon sunset.

P.S. Interesting script though, can you flesh it out a bit more? Maybe through a romance in it, to appeal to a broader audience ;)

Perfect, another reason to hate Steam with passion: the gamification of video games. A fucking ending to the Half-Life saga no, eh, Valve?

But ...but ... that's not virtual ! The fools, now we know who started the crisis of the videogame industry ... making people move from the front of their screen. Irresponsible !
Sidenote : whoa, nice piece of history you showed me there. I remember photography-ing my TV to send my high scores to console magazines, it seems so out of time. Is it normal I feel older and older each passing day ?

Is there a game I play with the cards?
Steam Trading Cards are about collecting and trading; there isn't a game with them. It is a great idea though and something we'd like to look at adding in the future, or maybe find a way to let users build games using the cards they have.

Gremlin Graphics used to do similar. I had a certificate from them once for completing one of the Lotus games on the CPC 464.
As for the Steam trading cards? It's far too apparent it's nothing more than a cash grab for Valve.

damn the drops are limited and no reset , which means for a game like dont starve , regardless of how long you play it , only 3 cards will drop and no more, if you are lucky and they are all are different you unlock the badge ....i got 2 same cards which means have to trade with others to complete it .........

Blatant, poorly executed cash grab by Valve. If EA had done this everyone would be crucifying them.
- You get the cards by having the game open, not achieving anything
- Only half of the number of available cards will drop for each user, meaning it's literally impossible for more than half the users to get the badges in most games
- The drop count doesn't reset unless you're in a game with in-app purchases, in which it'll reset if you buy something
- The only way to complete your set is to trade for them or, more likely, buy them on the Steam market (which Valve takes a cut of)
- Crafting badges gets you rewards like experience (for meaningless levels) and extra friends list slots
