I think you can make badges, like honour pledges that prove you're a collector of some sort. Otherwise I don't get it either.

e-peen doesn't enlarge on its own :P
if i understood the thing, you need to get all cards from one game tto make the badge -> that's why people trade cards .

i could be wrong though.

That badge can also be traded?

gutoraffaelli: Yeah, it's great, isn't it?

I decided to check the trading cards thing when it was officially released and earned around 25 dollars on a single day (thanks to a Brütal Legend foil card)!!! And a very kind soul gave me FTL in exchange for six of those summer cards.

Hawk52: I don't even understand how this thing works. I just played about an hour of Civ 5, and got three cards. There's really people willing to buy or trade for these? Is it just random what cards you get in a game, and you can get the same card multiple times? Why would anyone want multiples of the same card?

Never been into trading card games, so that may be why this makes zero sense to me.
The word "trading" is pretty key. If you're interested in these card and get two of the same, you trade on of them for something you don't have.

I mean, I've never been into trading card games either, but come on.

And if you're not into trading cards, you may put them on steam market and get yourself a free game or two after some time :P

Normal badges can be upgraded up to level 5. To do that, you need to collect the set 5 times. Foil badges only have 1 level, so you only need one set of foils.
As to why collect cards, why collect anything, be it vinyls, books, wine or games? Because you enjoy it.
You can't trade badges btw.

Should you have any more questions about badges, feel free to ask, I'll try to explain as best as I can.
me bit the bullet and bought the Tomb Raider Collection this morning :P
Couldn't resist to Fallout New Vegas Ultimate. Are there any essential mods if I want to keep it more or less vanilla?
Just in case anyone hasn't seen it, Saints Row The Third is on sale for $2.50 at GamersGate. I put it here because it's a Steam key and a ridiculous price :D

If you want a hardcore vanilla experience, then try a mod from the dev himself!

Look at his changes. I think it's a good piece of modding! :D

I can't say I've ever collected anything in my life for the sake of collecting. So I suppose that's why this makes no sense to me.

But hey, if I can find a way to turn these into games or money, super.
Cheers, that jsawyer mod looks pretty fun. Probably better for a second run though.

Regarding the trading cards: I wonder how long they keep awarding cards for idling in games. One of the advantages of Steam for developers seems to be the data tracking that Valve makes available to them. If thousands of players just let the game run in the background to grind cards that seems like a surefire way to screw with those stats for no upside whatsoever.

So far you can get all the card drops from idling in less than 4 hours, unless of course you let the game run over night. After those drops are done, idling won't give you any more cards. So, what benefit do you (as a developer) get from having people idle in your game?
1) You can show higher playtime stats, even though the player didn't do anything there. So unless you start adjusting all card game time downwards, you show that your game is loved more.
2) You get a cut from every card sold in the market. How is that a bad thing for doing absolutely nothing?
Question about Trine 2 complete 3-pack. When you purchase it, do you get 1 copy for your library and 2 for your inventory? Or something different?
