Steam is a microcosm that is the epitome of business in today's world. You think Steam support sucks? When's the last time you had a conversation with "customer service" at your health insurance?

I call it commoditization of the individual. It's ubiquitous. What began with the Magna Carta is now over .. the circle is complete. Business is your new lord. Shut up and bend over.

Zandolf: Seeing all the posts about how great steam is confuses me. Did I miss something while trying to get my non-steam games to run? I see a lot of games I'd like to try on steam, but to give up my other games while being chained to the Internet to play games on steam is insane to me. I know, there is an off line option that you can fight with to get it to work, when it will let you, but I want to play the games, not fight with the DRM. What am I missing that makes others think this is the best thing since sliced bread?

Pheace: Here, a thread called "Can someone give me one good reason why choose steam over DRM-Free?"

Some good opinions and conversation in there.
Thank you for the link. I had hoped to see a good reason for steam. There are a lot of cool games there. The pro's for steam on that thread are mostly subjective and say things like "And Steam doesn`t get in the way (much)" or "it's a bit nitpicky to claim that things like a few links at the top of your screen are being intrusive... although that's just my opinion really, I don't really care much about those things and don't even notice them." Or I don't care about DRM or my games are all in one place. While the cons are explicit. Steam seems to be every thing I thought it was and more (on the negative side) from reading that forum. It sounds like the games are in jail and you buy visiting rights?

Happy birthday!

Zandolf: As for Desura, would someone tell me what it is and what it does?
avatar
Fictionvision: Desura is a client that mainly focuses on indie games. The games you buy on there do not need the client running in order to play them. I have 100+ games on there from direct purchases and various bundles. The vast majority of the games on there are DRM Free. I think I ran into one that wanted you to register a CD key.

You aren't required to use the client if you log in through the website as there are links on each game's page to download installers. I mainly use it for convenience since the games can be ran directly after it installs them.
Thanks. that has been bugging me. Still wonder why it was needed for mods. Sorry for going off topic folks.

I guess that depends on your interpretation of what you thought it was. Judging by your previous post you seem to have the impression it breaks/locks you out of your non-steam games? It certainly doesn't do that normally.

You get massive diarrhea from eating onions?

Side effect.

Okay, cool. I was wondering because in Germany Sternburg is a famous cheap beer and since you mentioned Lidl I thought that it could be the same.

That was one of my issues. One of the games was HOMM3 on CD, I don't recall the other. They worked once I removed all the Steam stuff. Searching for answers is what led me to GOG. A bright side, you might say.

It isn't?

Pretty sure there's a downloads page for every mod hosted.

As I said, it's famous for being cheap, not the kind of stuff worth being imported to other countries (that's why I was surprised). Franziskaner and Paulaner are decent stuff with TV ads and everything.
