I don't mind the odd, intelligent, anti whatever thread. I appreciate warnings about issues with a new release and there have been a few posts with constructive criticisms and complaints about Steam too which are fine when not repeated constantly. The OP posts in this topic though are just braindead, childish rage and bring absolutely nothing to the table.. I, like a large majority of people out there, am happy with Steam and have few issues with it. I did loathe it when it first came out but it had a lot of teething issues.

iainmet: I know, its a shame really, the people that refuse Steam are missing out on some great new titles. Not forgetting supporting devs which in turn keeps new games coming to us end users. So be it though, its their loss really.

I have a good friend on another forum that has a Steam account and had only a few games on there, didn't like it much at all. He has now warmed to Steam after I was gifting him loads of the spare stuff that I already owned from bundles. He actually likes the platform now and can see its merits. He doesn't show his profile or get involved with the community stuff but his gaming on there has been trouble free.
I got a free game with a graphics card. It was a download from steam. After I downloaded the client and the game I tried to run a couple of games I had on CD. They wouldn't run even though I had run them numerous times before. I tried everything I could think of to fix the problem. Removing steam, and that wasn't easy, fixed it so I could run the other games on my computer.

Seeing all the posts about how great steam is confuses me. Did I miss something while trying to get my non-steam games to run? I see a lot of games I'd like to try on steam, but to give up my other games while being chained to the Internet to play games on steam is insane to me. I know, there is an off line option that you can fight with to get it to work, when it will let you, but I want to play the games, not fight with the DRM. What am I missing that makes others think this is the best thing since sliced bread?

While I'm at it. What is Desura? I went to moddb.com to get a mod for a game and Desura was required. Instead of DL`ing a game, I got Desura and it insisted on being online all the time. I deleted it and haven't messed with moddb.com since. I tried to read about it, but found nothing that explained why I have to have an open link to Desura and what it does while its online. I wrote them and asked if what it was, if it was a form of DRM but the only answer I got was:
You don't need to have Desura you can get mods via moddb.com and we don't collect any information from your PC

Seriously, I'm not trying to start a fight on here. I just don't understand how steam is useful. How do you play other games (bought on CD) with it? Does it also interfer with business software and if so, how do you get around that? What happens when you install a program from CD, does it also cause problems with new installs? As for Desura, would someone tell me what it is and what it does?

I mainly grab games on steam when they're dirt cheap, like many others. However I do enjoy the overlay (as I can quickly access the web in game if I get stuck or if I have been playing a while and want to check email etc) and I also use the friends list quite a bit. Even with drm free games I tend to have them in steam for the overlay.

If gog offers a game drm free for the same price or only a tiny bit more expensive and they make organising my collection on here better then I would go drm free every time but I'd still add them to my games list in steam and play them through that. Not being able to separate indie, old & modern games on gog is holding me back from buying on here though as I like to be organised.

Desura is a client that mainly focuses on indie games. The games you buy on there do not need the client running in order to play them. I have 100+ games on there from direct purchases and various bundles. The vast majority of the games on there are DRM Free. I think I ran into one that wanted you to register a CD key.

You aren't required to use the client if you log in through the website as there are links on each game's page to download installers. I mainly use it for convenience since the games can be ran directly after it installs them.
